After catching my first Trout over the Bank Holiday weekend, I chose the same venue this week for my third outing, Walker Wood. As a beginner, I worked on the principle that it must be an easy place to catch, and the trout would be lined up in orderly queues each one waiting for my next cast, how wrong I was!
I kitted up full of anticipation and optimism, looking over the wall from the car, I could see several fish rising only feet away, and each one had my name all over it.
As I was checking that I had everything required for the sport ahead, I noticed something move near my feet, I looked down to see two toads, one of which must have been very tired, as it had hitched a ride on its mate's back. Well, that has to be worth a quick snap I thought, and as toads seem to be very obliging creatures, they waited until I was ready with the camera. Or, it could have been that the big toad had stopped for a breather, as it too was now tired having to carry it's mate.
Let's get on with the fishing! Perhaps I should rephrase that with, I'll continue my lesson?
The first spot I chose looked idyllic, image a large cathedral archway cut through dense trees and undergrowth, fish not more than an arm's reach away. However, I'm not using my arm, I'm using a rod, reel and line! After the second cast, the gargoyles started with their good humour and decided to take turns catching my line. Don't get me wrong, I love a good laugh, I like the next man enjoy taking the "Mickey", but these buggers were in it for the long haul.
I move in search of greener pastures, but those gargoyles have friends in high places. Some of those places were only a few inches off the ground. After several confrontations, and believe me, I gave them a good piece of my mind, I decided that it was enough for one day...
After reaching the sanctuary of my car, I was confronted by this cheeky fellow. A well bread Pheasant. Well, that has to be worth a quick snap I thought, and as pheasants seem to be very obliging creatures!!!
