I have been using tapered leaders so far but I wanted to ask how do I make my own leader for my WF8 fly line?

Is it just a case of attaching 8lb leader followed by 6lb followed by 4lb leader?

If so, what knot do I use to attach the different tippets?

Excuse me if I have got some of the terminology wrong.

I use a three turn water knot and yes just do what you said with the breaking strain going down.

Or just forget about tapers, and go with a single piece of tip BS line, for nymphing/lures, it makes virtually no difference, and takes out unneccessary knots.
