Default Tradition???????????

Sorry to ask more questions ,but as far as tradition goes,me included here till I fished for rainbows.I believed that Browns went for small flies like, adams, grey wulffs, zulu,s and rainbows, ace of spades, black matukas, muddlers.Even when I fished for sea trout and salmon,I used peter ross, silver invicta,s before,
This is when I started years ago
Then as time progressed ,things started to fall into boxes for fish species.

browns,,,,small flies,
rainbows, lures
salmon, trebles and doubles
and sea trout , still the smaller ones I used years ago.

But hence more confusion, why is this? Why is it believed that rainbows dont take a small fly by those who fish only for browns and only take big fluffy things?
Why do we not use single size 10,s, small hooks and flies like, peter ross or invictas or teal blues for salmon?
Do brown trout not take lures at all Like a damsel?

Is it all a myth or True and where has it come from?

Not a trick question and something I have never seen debated.Maybe wrong but Im interested in thoughts and views on it.

Cheers Joni for the reply,
let me ask as I know you fish for browns only,if you were going to fish for rainbows, what flies would you fish for them?

Sorry to put you on the spot, but it is relevant.
cheers bud.

The rainbows on our water obviously haven't heard that one. They'll sip minute flies all day long, even when it's teaming with roach and rudd fry.

Funny you should mention that Kevin , Was out on the club water the day , Nice wee chop on the water , was joking to one of the boys before we went out it was a cracking day to nab one of the resident browns that are in the water . Anyway second cast this fish hammered the point fly size 10 sunburst katie after a wee fight a thought this dosnt feel very heavy , right enough up it comes a 1lb brown wae the flee nearly down at its tail ( greedy wee bugg3r ) As the day proggresed it went along the same lines ended up with 7 rainbows and 4 browns all the browns nailed the lure on the point . Ive always found early season on Loch Awe that a humungus on the point always seems to be the one they nail . As much as wee like the notion of a brown/rainbow nipping a wee cdc etc off the top the best pleasure in fishing , sometimes they just need a good mouthfull

Thats one of the reasons for the thread.many who do fish for browns ,when they go for the rainbows, head straight for the big stuff, when using what they normally would fish for browns work just the same.Vice versa a lure will take a brown also. But My thoughts are its been through the tradition that we may have become accustomed to this way of thinking ,which isnt really true.
a bit like those who wont fish a lure or a booby(me) or use an indicator with alure and only buzzers, the list could go on.

I agree Kevin i dont have a bung or a booby in my box ( just my prefrence ) There are boys i go fishing with who fish lures all year round , and granted they have there day . But me personally i like the challenge of trying to get them on small dries , nymphs , etc . Ive stood beside them when the fish are heading and tailing all about them and they are still pulling lures , when the answer to them is staring them in the face . To me that seems to be the starting point for newcomers to fishing , pulling lures and frankly a lot of them dont progress . Tradition to me is starting the season on the wets with the odd lure as the weather gets warmer then we go onto nymphs . dries , then onward into summer usually just dries all day long , then heading into autumn and the fry bash starts we venture onto bigger flies again , and before you know it were at the end of another year Dont you just love fishing .

I fished the little river on one of my club cards when it opened on the 1st. Chatting to one of the other anglers, he said that he'd seen more people fishing than he had ever seen before, and that one guy had been fishing the sort of lures one might use for stillwater rainbows - and had caught brownies on them! Go figure, as they say.

O.K. here's the deal.
everyone fish with a size twelve silver invicta for brown trout.
size ten peter ross for sea trout
size ten montana nymph for rainbows
size eight gary dog for salmon.
vary the line as required, but dont vary the fly
bet you all catch the same each year!!
regards
bert
