These things appeared years ago and were generally considered to be a 'waste of space'. Inserting them into the tip of the line is an interesting way of spending time and best done out of ear shot of younger family members. Hingeing and cracking was a real issue as was security - best advice was to whip over where the eyelet was inserted.
