Cool Matching Rod & Line

Hi
I'm fairly new to fly fishing having started last September.
I already own a Flextec CRX66 6/7 rod & have a Snowbee floating WF7 line on this. I have acquired an Orvis Clearwater Classic rod with mid-flex rated 8. As I'm looking to use it mainly for reservoir Bank fishing in Derbyshire do I need to load it with "8" line or will my "7" suffice?

Regards
Paul

Your 7 wt line will probably be too light if the rod is rated 8 ...I'd suggest that an 8wt line is what you need ... unless you're able to keep rather a lot of line in the air.

Thanks for the info.

What will actually happen to the line when casting?

Try it - you will frequently find you prefer a different line rating from the guy who rated the rod.

What with the Managing Director of Severn Trent having recently taken an 'irrevocable' decision to close down almost all bank fishing - where are you going to do this in Derbyshire ?

You may have to learn to cast 30-40 miles !

Best wishes

The problem using a line which is too light for the rod is that it may be impossible to aerialise enough line to load the rod properly. The result being that the rod does not "work" for you and you may be unable to cast very far.

An experienced caster may be able to get over this problem, but it is unlikely that a beginner will be able to cast satisfactoraly.

I've heard it said you are doing a pretty good job at that yourself Steve.
