well i'm sure a lot of people will give you advice and probably better than mine,

but assuming your fishing for trout on small stocked waters from the bank then I'd never leave the house early season without a stock of gold head damsels.

Fish them on a floating line with quite a long leader, try various retrieves, fiqure of 8 or slow slow quick.
let them sink a bit first before starting retrieve.

taken quite a few early season trout with these methods.

I have found for early season res fishing black and green are the two must have colours, viva wooly bu**er etc and just mix it up when it comes to retrieve, floating or intermediate line depending on the wind,12 to 14 ft leader.hope this helps.

Default Absolute must of a fly

I've had over 20 fighting fit Rainbows & couple of Blues in the last 7 days all on a home made GRHE (Gold ribbed Hares ear) & a pheasant tail nymph, at 3 different stillwaters in Lancashire. My other mates have done well on Pea head fritzs.

A Black & Peacock spider with flou green Antron tail, size 14/12 on the dropper, they love it! Goldhead Damsel or Apps bloodworm on point.

Black Chenille is the one to have. When I went early last year (March) the limit was five. I had to take the bl**dy thing off after forty mins because I had four on the bank and was off home if I cast again.

A nice slow draw works, as does a few sharp tugs. Let it sink for a count of ten. Rem to take it off when you need a rest.
