There are different close seasons for different fish on different rivers.....

All the Brown Trout rivers I can name are open from the start of April to the end of September - quite a few open sometime in March and some are open for the first week or so of October.

Salmon seasons vary river by river - some starting as early as January and some finishing as late as November.

Grayling can be fished for through the winter

Coarse fish with fly - subject to the usual close season.

Midlands Region Byelaw - rivers are open for brown trout March 18th to October 7th.

Interesting thought occurs! The Monnow, Wye and Lugg, have been wholey within EA Wales's clutches but the EA have recently changed it so that the English parts of those catchments are overseen by EA Midlands. I do hope we are not about to have a new, later opening day!

as a matter of fact I wouldn't mind swapping the first few weeks for an extra week at the end - were it not for another prior engagement usually at that time.

I'd like to see both ends of the season chopped off, leaving the later half of the Mayfly hatch through to the start of sedge activity in early September. June 5th-Sept 1st inclusive. Incidently, only 7 full time rod license checkers now working for the EA between Bristol and Doncaster.

That's good, cause I haven't bought my licence yet.

The ideal of course would be no fishing at all.

But then that would alienate all anglers and unsurprisingly their interest in and support for rivers would dwindle.

One has always to be careful when setting a price.

No, there has got to be fishing, otherwise what would be the point to it all?
The 'Slaney Season' would give trout care free feeding at a point in the year when they need to build condition and an early respite so they can concentrate on the build up -to the build up-to spawning. Specialist Grayling fishing from the Sept 1st close would replace catching 'milky does' and risk compromising future generations. Of course Turkeys wont vote for Chrimbo and the EA is only ever likely to give anglers more of what they want, at the expense of the fish (as proved by the abolishment of the coarse fishing closed season).

...and to the starter of this thread; a local boy I see; The Derwent Hotel, Whatstandwell, Derbyshire It's open too.
