Looks like an extremely good and versatile kit to me depending on where you are going to fish. It'll handle medium to large rivers and small still waters. First extra thing I would buy if one's available is a spare spool for the reel because if you fish still water of any size you may want an intermediate line.

Compared to what people were fishing with in the not to distant past, its a great set up, Are you self taught or are you going to get yourself a casting lesson..... it is worthwhile thinking about it.

( and you may at some point find you prefer a 6wt with that rod especially if your not casting a lot of line out past the tip)

Yep that lot will do just fine. What type of fishing are you going to do-lake?
I got a couple of spare fold up landing nets if you need one.

A couple of lessons with an instructor would be money well spent, changing the line will not make you a better caster but a lesson or 2 might.

Rusty, you may be surprised how much better your casting is than you think. it always looks as if the guy along the bank's casting is more smooth and refined than your own, but looks can be deceiving. stick at it, and the outfit sounds just right to start out with, although as Pom pointed towards, your casting may be better with the 6 weight line.

I'm looking to go out of Chew Valley lake for the first time soon as I can - can anyone give me a basic idea of the equipment I need. I have the rod and reel sorted, just not sure about line, leader and flies...............

As others have pointed out, a bit of instruction is worth while, but, failing that, yes a slightly heavier line usually makes casting a bit easier - especially useful for beginners. If you want to try that without spending lots more money you might want to look at the cheap lines from Mullarkeys or John Norris - they are excellent value for money and will work perfecty well untill you get the hang of things and get to know exactly what you need.

Regards

Jeff

The weight of line you will need will be determined (mostly) by the rod you're using. You will probably want to start off with a floating line, but excatly what leader and flies to use will be best advised by the locals at Chew. Try ringing the fishery and ask them what's working at the moment - I'm sure you will get helpful advice there.

Best of luck

Jeff
