Default How do YOU plumb the depths?

Hello
Just wanted to find out the best way to assess the depth of the water when, say, fishing from a boat at anchor?

What do you do to get a quick, accurate reading?

Thanks
JD

1. Depth finder (echo sounder) or whatever electronic gubbins.
2. Lead Line.
3. Mark the anchor chain by metres and feel for it touching ground - then pay out twice as much again.

Get a thin rope and knot or mark it every foot.

Get a large lead weight and tie it to the end of the rope.

Chuck it over the side ot the boat and count the knots.

Easy!

Anyone with 'A' Level maths or above could put a knot every 2 foot for anyone without such qualification then a good knowledge of even numbers is a must for this method

Indeed, I recall a conversation with Dick Shrive when he stated the same ... it sticks in my my because Bob Church butted in and claimed that Dick only did it because he was trying to fish deep!
