Default one dimentional ?

Am i alone in thinking that a lot of anglers young and old are so pre-occupied with strike indicators and the static bung method, i have seen anglers doing this for hours on end without moving more than 20 feet.
Yes ok it catches it share of fish but can you class it fly-fishing ? in my view
it's alike bubble float fishing with a worm and doesn't belong in fly fishing.
When fish are on top or just below slurping down sedge, olive, buzzer etc,
you surely fish accordingly " nothing better than dry fly or buzzer fishing for
me". In particular we should be teaching the youngsters the whole -
spectrum of fishing " dries, buzzer, traditionals, and nymph.
For some these methods have never been tried, some don't strip a lure
when lure fishing is required, lure fishing can be fast and furious with
heart thumpings takes which adds to the fun. When anglers all around
are catching according to methods needed on the day you would think
the bubble float brigade would have a crack at other methods but alas
they wont budge. I would gladly try and explain or show the different
methods that are available to them and i bet many other like minded
anglers would do like wise. But some are so pre-occupied with this
mundane method and numbers game.

I think that you might have a point here. Indicator fishing definatly does make one lazy to try other techniques. However, it is such an easy way of detecting sub surface takes, that it doeasn't surprise me. I have seen people who use this technique most of the time, actually struggle with other techniques. Anyway, it doesn't really matter now does it? any fishiong is better than no fishing, and if it keeps the kids fishing instead of drifting through the shopping malls, I'm all for it.

Granted there a lot of folks using this method and dangling everything under these floats, but i dont feel the need to interfere with anyones day out fishing using methods they are allowed to by fishery owners and if they have an enjoyable day doing it then thats their pleasure. You can give people choices and advise them on what to do on all methods but when they choose their favourite method and its not yours what can you do.I had a guy last year fishing beside me with his bung on and he wasnt even getting a sniff as i was having fish after fish taking my dries with no firm hook ups but enjoyable all the same.Anyway he dandered over and asked what i using so i gave him one of my flies and off came his bung to try my fly and bang a beautiful full fined resident fish of 3 and half pounds or more and a very happy chap he was, he missed 2 more shortly after then packed up.So in passing was telling me he had blanked often with the bung method but now wanted to do more dry fly fishing and wanted to give me 30 quid to tie him up some of my patterns.Cant bring myself to sell flies as it just makes me feel uncomfortable and have always been glad to help others when they struggle to catch. When someone shakes my hand and thanks me for sharing then im just as happy and glad to help. Not my intention to change his bung tactics but he was keen to change on his own after seeing what i do..Never used a bung but thats just me.

Surely, this all boils down to what the individual wants to do doesn't it? I personally have never fished the bung as I can't see any enjoyment in it myself but that's not to say that others don't. Conversly, if others have no wish to fish with more traditional methods then I for one wouldn't foist my opinions on them. As long as they're within the rules of the fishery and smiling I can't see any problem.

Is lure stripping 'fly fishing'?

Surely fishing a larger/bushier fly and allowing flies/nymphs to hang underneath is the same. But will be more universally accepted I would think than a fluorescent orange bung type indicator.

ok i agree each to their own but some that have had poor days blame all but their methods, but it would be nice to get the kids to try other methods and by the way lighthouse i didn't say anywhere that using lures was fly fishing! i said lure fishing

I have watched the youth over here learning to fly fish including my nephew and i can honestly say i have not seen them learning to do so with a bung....all seem to want to learn casting flies and dont sit still to often.Maybe there is the odd one with their pops just doing as pops does but not that i have noticed.
