Default Which Flurocarbon

I was fishing the other day at Aulderneuk fishery in Scotland, I was fishing 5lb fullingmill flurocarbon with three size 14 diawls and was snapped twice, one on the dropper at first strike and one during playing the fish. The fish are normally in the 3 -6lb range. I would like advise on which thin diameter fluro would be strong enough.

Possibly try moving up to 8lb mate.

Stockies don't know what fluoro or nylon is.

Agree with the pirate,5lb is on the weak side especially when fishing for stockies when double hook ups can occur,i use grand max 9.5lb nymphing and 12.5lb pulling lures, bit on the pricey side but its good tack.

Well i use 5-6-7lb fluoro from diawa and wychwood its nice and supple, the 5lb is good for single flies and 6lb with 7lb droppers for a team, but if you used the said lines with fulling mill use the mill for droppers as its stiffer But dont get the 4lb in either for some reason its ****Otherwise there are some very good monos out there , with very low diameters, dont be fooled by claims that fluoro is invisible to fish and you wont be ripped offGaz

Are you using a 2 or 3 turn knot for droppers, and silly question are you using the dropper one away from yer butt? i cant see why 5lb would snap, remember fluoro dosnt have the stretch of mono so if yer tight on the line then perhaps a snap could occur, ive had 7+ nutty fish on 5lb with no problems , but when using teams the knot has to be right, ive found a 2 turn with low BS fluoro under 5lb and 3 turn over that for droppers, but more to do with the different thicknesses of the lines you attach together not so much breaking strain.simple thing is to test yer knots before going fishing with a weigh scale and see which knot works better2-3 or even 4.Gaz

Don't use fluorocarbons at all unless you like breakages during play ! Ordinary plain , clear Bayer is cheap as chips and I've used it for yearsandyears !

One rule of thumb - If you're on a 6# outfit don't drop below 5lb mono - ie one lb bs below the AFTM is pretty safe - as long as you don't aim the rod straight down the line !

Best wishes

I use Fulling Mill Fluro and Copoly, but don't drop below 6lb on either when fishing stillwaters. Still gives good turnover and presentation without sacrificing strength in my view. Haven't had a break off yet on the fluro (famous last words perhaps)

Default orvis mirage

Hi,

I wouldn't go past orvis mirage 9lb low diameter and strong knot strength on a 3 turn water knot, great for nymphs.

Your choice of using 5lb FM fluro. for nymphing on the smaller waters......... is a good one !, what i would say is try and use 1 dropper as opposed to 2 with this material.
I use 5lb FM and i'm very happy with it............
On the smaller waters were apparently the fish don't know the difference between 5-10lb leaders ....... just remember, the lower the diameter the more takes you are likely to encounter, it's really then up to us to not lose the fish.......... no-one can help a double hook up, but in my experience these are rare events when nymphing smaller waters.
If you find that you are still having problems try buy one get one free g3....in 6lb.......
