Default Free or cheap fishing in Scotland

Hi all,

I am spending around 3 days per week driving/delivering in Scotland. I need information about free or cheap fishing on any water.
I understand Loch Lomond is free where-ever there is public access, Do the forum members know of any other waters where I can cast a line after a hard days driving, preferably somewhere I can park up for the night as well?

With regards

Dave

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it is illegal to fish in Scotland without written permission from the riparian owner of the water.

In some places the fishing may in fact be free but permission still needs to be obtained.
I think you will get short change parking up and trying to fish Loch Lomond through the night.
Sorry!
p.s. Is it game fishing you are after or coarse?

As I understand it there are a few waters in Scotland where no permission to fish is necessary. Loch Lochy near Fort William, Loch Doon in Ayrshire and I believe some of the lochs and lochans on Rannoch Moor are free. I think Loch Ba is one.

There may be others but those listed above are the only ones I know of.
I have fished Lochs Lochy and Doon and there is plenty of roadside parking and camping is allowed around Loch Doon. I'm not sure about overnight parking around Loch Lochy.

Lochy has browns and escapee rainbows and allegedly the odd salmon, Doon seems to be full of small brownies around 3 or 4 to the pound plus perch and pike.

If you are driving up the west coast road, all the blue stuff on your left is free to fish, also if you are going up the east coast everything on your right is free also.

Give us a better idea of where you will be and I am sure the Scots boys on here will help you out with some cheap fishing, but very very little is free.

Thank you for the very prompt replies, please keep them coming.
I will try provide a bit more info...
I am in Scotland, 3 days and 2 nights every week. Usually my driving hours run out around 5 oclock. The plan is to park up somewhere and have a couple of hours casting a fly. To catch anything would be a total bonus.
I cover all of Scotland.

@ruby pennel Just what I was looking for...cheers mate...any more??
@maharg After driving 9 or ten hours All I would like to do is relax casting a line for a couple of hours, I am not a night fisherman when I have to drive the next day. I certainly would'nt mind paying a fiver (occassionally) to fish for an evening. C+R obviously.
@REIDY10_0 I will put more thought into SWFF never done it before.
@g bigtrout You certainly do not apply to join the Thursday night rolled up trouser leggers, ya get an invite:P

There's loads of places that are free in that once you are more than a mile or so from the nearest road or track and north of the central belt then it's unlikely you'll be bothered. There are exceptions!

Roadside waters are quite different - most require permits. Loch Lomond isn't free in fact it's quite expensive for a day ticket at around £15 - It's controlled by the Loch Lomond angling association. It's primarily a salmon and seatrout water and isn't great for brownies.

There are some roadside lochs between Crianlarich and Glencoe village that are free and popular - these are the ones around Loch Ba.

Bruce Sandison has a new guide to the waters of Scotland detailing where to get permits - if indeed they are needed. I think it's called Rivers and Lochs of Scotland.
