Default Dog nobblers....and hello, by the way

Dear all,

I am returning the the wonderful art of fly fishing and will be venturing out this weekend to Narborough Lakes near Kings' Lynn to cast a fly for the first time for a few years.

When I started to rebuild my collection of flies I could not beleive the good old favourite "nobblers" were still available.

I used them at Rutland, Draycote and Thornton will deadly results. It took me back a bit!

There used to be a lure called a frog nobbler as well if memory serves. I will have to search for a sample or two.

Incidentally, hello!!

If I remember rightly a Frog nobbler had bead chain eyes in place of a lead shot...At the London FDG Branch auctions Mike Humphries often sold boxes of Dog Nobblers under the name "Long shank lead head nymph" with a promise not to mention the buyers name

Cheers

The well known pro fly dresser Sid Knight legally trade-marked the name "Dog Nobbler" in the 1980s...hence some of the humorous non-uses of that fly name, not least by Steve Parton in previous Sparton catalogues.

Sid Knight still sells them, and they still catch fish !

As someone said on another string, if you have ever seen a real live damsel nymph or spooned examples from a trout, some of the "damsels" sold and used these days are really green tadpoles or nobblers. Not a criticism, just an observation, by the way.

Frog Nobbler as described by Chris.

Lethal on stillwaters the same as the 'dogs'.

Nice anecdote about MH.

Cheers

Dog nobbler was, i think, invented by Trevor Houseby. he used to call large trout 'dogs' hence the name.

Default Dog nobblers

Some of your fly patterns are so similar to ours in the states but with a different name. Take for an example this dog nobbler fly. It is a woolly bugr with lead eyes. This fly pattern was first tied by Russell Blessing a Pennsylvania Fly Tyer as early as 1967.

Now some of your fly patterns like the blob I haven't had one Montana fish in a lake give it a second glance, I believe the difference is that the UK is fishing in stocked lakes where Montana hasn't been stocked sine the early 80's. Your buzzers I like and your Diawl Bach too. Good patterns.

I am going to be in London this summer, any lakes of choice to fish?

thank you

Kevin

Kevin,

I believe Grafham is about an Hrs drive North of London, I dont know what is around London. But would suggest Grafham if you can manage to get up there.
I live in Scotland sorry can't be more helpful, I'm sure some the English lads will be able to offer other venues.
