Default hello all

hi guys and girls, just joined the forum and basically wanted to say hello.

i'm a fishing obsessed welshman, who having moved to norway two years ago, realised that my previous 10 years of fly fishing in the uk couldn't have prepared me for what the fishing is like here.

the main difference here is there are a lot more wild fisheries here, and i am yet to see a smallwater with a stocked population, at least in the trondheim area. i live about 30 seconds from the trondheim fjord (literally within casting distance), so i spend the spring/summer chasing anything i can with the fly rod, including trout, salmon and sea trout in the rivers and lakes surrounding the town, then the usually sub -20c winter hauling cod, coleys and the odd halibut out of the fjord. last year i was introduced to saltwater fly fishing (which i found does not work in -20c temperatures , the flyline freezes and snaps when it's out of the water for more than a few seconds), and found myself catching fish i didn't even think would go near a fly, even cod and coleys will go for the right fly!!. the other main difference is the price. i pay around £40 a year for a season pass on a beautiful stretch of river full of brownies. i remember paying the same price in a uk fishery to catch rainbows in a pond not much bigger than the average back garden.

i still take my rod when i come home though, the uk has some fantastic fishing spots, and probably the best fishing community in the world. the amount i learnt from chatting to people on the bank, would have cost a fortune from a professional guide.

anyway, i'm rambling a bit now so i'll end it there.

nice to meet you all anyway

Welcome to the Forum Stevo.

This reminds me to contact my cousin Arvid who lives in Trondheim. Torsk outnumbered the Coalfish when I fished there (late April).

the reason we came over was my other half was offered a job here, she asked me what i thought. you know what my first thought was - i'm gonna need a bigger rod tube heehee.

funniest thing is she said norway will be great to spend more time together instead of me fishing all the time. yup, she wasn't too clued up on fishing was she . allthough now i've converted her to a fishing addict, she loves to spend a day here and there hunting cod. but she is still a health risk when i try to teach her fly fishing. she manages to hook everything around her (including me), apart from the fish.

you're right there jeffr, around 7-10 pounds a pint. it's a hugely expensive country. one of my freinds little girl's just had braces fitted, that cost £2000, not including the monthly adjustments. tax is pretty horrific here too, income tax is 36%, and vat is 25%.

i guess it's offset by the wages though, the minimum wage is nearly £15 an hour, and you get you're holiday pay in january every year. the best thing is though, holiday pay is calculated as 10% of you're previous years earnings. even a person on minimum wage would earn around £18000 a year after tax, with about £1800 (untaxed) in your back pocket for a nice holiday. another strange thing, the king of norway decreed that you only have to pay half the normal income tax in october. nice.

anyway, i'm looking forward to come over in may, i do actually miss the double figure rainbows, and i'm looking forward to visiting my old spots in north and mid wales.
