Default Droppers

when I tie a 3 turn water knot for my droppers, the fly gets wrapped around the main tippet.

What can I do.

Thank you

Kevin

How long are your droppers try shortening them to around 6-8 inches.

Not alot you can do to stop it really.
I put a simple over hand knot upto it after tying it,just helps by kicking the dropper out 90 deg to the main line.
Hope this helps.

Cheers Craig

are you using fluorocarbon for your droppers as its stiffer than normal mono and helps set it off from your tippet, i never use three turns always use two turns for a water knot ..........

Me I use 4 turn but not fluorcarbon .

Serious comment - are you using droppers on stillwater or moving - because you're in Montana I'd automatically assume moving? Tell you why : the stream drag effects probably mean you need to tie the dropper on the downside end as opposed to the upside of your water knot .

On stillwaters I use the uplead for small flies and the downlead for streamers where there is a need for the streamer to run hydrodynamically . The combination on stillwaters of big streamer and uplead is not good and will produce the necking knot in fairly short order. ( There's an illustration of this in a book I wrote in '82 detailing the effects .)

On moving water always dropper on the downlead - far less chance of an overhand knot forming accidentally - and an overhand knot in the wrong place reduces the bs of your leader by around 50% .

Best wishes

They look rather large and obvious Mr Trout, sometimes even a two turn water knot looks too big to me.

Some muppet in trout fisherman last month was recommending 12" droppers and retying at 6" ....... anyway just use a double grinner and poke yer dropper throught the hole before pulling tight.

They aren't gad, they are tiny wee things, and worth about a penny each.
But they work well, can't be seen, and make no splash on casting.
After one days useage, I was convinced.

Steve, I thought it was considered practise to always use the lower of the two tails as it is reckoned that if you use the upper then the chances of a breakage are increased dramatically?
