If and when the time comes Kev, it's Timmy Harris for me.
Having recently seen his workmanship and prices, there is no other choice.
No doubt Mostyn will be along shortly.

Hi Kev - please take this question in the best way possible: have you tried fishing for a while with a cane rod?

I only ask because I was convinced that I would love a cane rod because I grew up fishing more 'traditional' graphite/ fibreglass rod actions. I had cast cane rods a few times, but last season I had an opportunity to fish with a cane rod for a day.

Frankly, I disliked it. In my opinion, it had a heavy swing weight and less 'feel' than say a Winston WT. And this was one of the brands widely recommended by many on this forum....

I accept that cane rods have a certain traditional appeal, and some people do like the action and feel, but I guess my message is definitely try in the field before you buy.

Again, you might already know this, and I apologise if you do. I don't know you or your background.

Its just that there have been a lot of posts about cane lately on this forum, and plugs for particular cane rod makers, and I've been wanting to get this off my chest for a long time! They aren't for everyone!

Let the 'caning' begin...

hi mike,i fished the wye the other week and used my mates dickerson cane rod and got on with it realy well but i am far from a cane expert, merely a novice with cane but have fly fished for 40 years now and just fancy one.
you can actually try the rods out with tim harris to get the feel of what suits you...

Very wise words Mike, hence the reason I haven't jumped in and bought one.
I have three cane rods inherited from my father, and I learnt to fish with one of them, but I don't use them anymore as they are frankly, awful to use compared to more modern materials.
My hope is to meet up with Mostyn this year and have a cast or two with his before I decide if it's a route I want to go down.
The action will have to be one hell of a lot different to the ones I already own, or I wont be placing an order.
Saying that, if I did, it would be with TH, as I think his rods are superb creations and a fair price.
I think a lot of people feel the need to progress to cane, as though it's a must have later in life, but I am yet to be convinced.

Hi Mike,

Oh you doubting Thomas! The modern cane rod, as produced by the likes of Tim Harris and Bbamboo; two of the best "Modern Cane Rod Makers in the UK" are nothing like the old heavy wands that were produced many many years ago! You need educating Mike!! When next we fish the streams together? You will eat your words; after using the little vixen (my TH cane rod) for a-while! That's if your prepared to be educated from that over priced Sage equipment your stuck to? Most modern cane rod makers, will produce a product to suit your exacting requirements! And if I could afford to change all my Carbon rods to " MODERN" cane rods; I would.

You said bring it on Mike! Thought it might come better from a friend! especially when you put your foot in your mouth! So, many anglers are changing to cane for their pleasure of fishing; could we all be wrong?

Open mind and give it a fair trial! I did; and now I'm truely hooked (excuse the pun) on fishing with cane : "The Modern Cane Rods"

Take a look at OSD's work on the Rod Building Forum

His work is exemplary, he won't charge you a fortune and his after sales service is second to none.

I have 2 of his rods and I know GarethL has one - exquisite fishing tools.

Yes I agree! Bob makes a nice rod; I've used Gareth's rod; and It's a cracking wee rod! It's what prompted me to get one the same size and taper - only I bought mine with a British rod builder : Tim Harris.

I'd be happy to give your new modern cane rod a workout Mostyn! I'm open to changing my mind...

Mileage varies as they say. As a fishing tool, my experience with graphite has been better (so far).
