I was walking the Swale near Richmond today and saw two chaps fly fishing. Am I right in thinking that it is still the closed season from both game and coarse fishing? I understood that the trout season only starts on Thursday 25th. Is there any way they could be fishing legally at this time?

It varies from 16th March to 1st April, depends on local byelaws, fishery rules/club rules etc. Some stillwaters never have a close season but others do.

Indeed in the Yorkshire area the byelaw states that the season for trout doesn't open until March 25th.

Grayling fishing surely finishes on March 14th in Yorkshire?
