Default Casting help

Hi All,

I've had some really good advice on tackle purchasing from the forums so I am hoping someone can help me with my next question?

Basically, I have just started fly fishing and I absolutely love it. I have had a casting lesson and can now comfortable get an appropriate amount of line out on to the water, BUT, the line never seems to fall nice and straight as I see others doing, when I shoot the last amount of line, it almost kicks on the reel and then recoils a little bit so that when it lands, it's never quite straight.

Can anybody think of anything that springs to mind as to how I can improve the delivery of the line on to the water?

Thanks you in advance!

Hi.

Sounds like your over powering the forward cast if it is recoiling/ bouncing back, remember the forward cast is the presentation cast.

Practise your casting so it goes out with as little effort as you can get away with, hope this helps.

Thanks SAGE. I will definitely have a look at this when I practice my casting tomorrow. Perhaps it's just my lack of experience as a novice, but it's frustrating when the fly doesn't turn over beautifully....

Definately sounds like what Sage said. I went out for the first time in years this weekend and got a bit eager at times in getting my line out quite far. I was definately powering the rod and had a right mess on my hands. Did it gentler and smoother and it went out fine

I echo Andrews comments, the final cast, and all others predeeding it should look and feel effortless, the only way to do this it to practice casting and on every cast reduce the power until it collapses, then add a little in

It sound like you are casting more line than you have off the reel. Try stripping all the line and some backing off the reel before you start casting. Once you have cast a few times see how much line is still lying on the ground and reel most of it back onto the reel. Cast some more and see if there is still line on the ground. Eventually you will find the right amount that you can cast comfortably leaving a loop of line loose from the reel, that should stop the kick back.

A lot of beginner's casting faults stem from trying too hard - just relax.

The kick back is due to overpowering the cast and not the amount of line cast, I can get kickback on 30ft of line and 85ft of line, as well as all distances in between, so what is the amount I should be casting to prevent this? 100ft?

I can also cast 15ft of line so it lands perfectly, and again, 50ft so it lands perfectly, to much power will see the kick back fault show again

Try taking the power out, let me know what happens, I would be surprised if it doesn't cure the fault

Chris: Thanks for pointing this out. I will definitley try this tomorrow and I wil post on here tomorrow evening to let you know.

It's so frustrating having learnt how to shoot line etc, to find that I can't present the fly neatly on the final cast, I end up having to make significant corrections once the line has landed, i.e pulling in an amout of line sharply to get a neatish/straight line.

Thanks,

Matt.

You could try the double-haul and feather your line with your left hand on the final forward cast, so that it lands in a straight line.
