Default Bank House, Caton - advice please?

Hi,

I want to go to Bank House at Caton, Lancaster this week and was hoping someone could advise me on what flies I should be taking.

I'm still a novice and have recently started tying my own flies, so I'd like to get tying some for the trip.

I went there for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and was fishing on buzzers as the water was still very cold, but it should be a lot warmer now.

Thanks, Mike.

Advice? Forget it and concentrate on a proper trout water!

Seriously, if you must chuck yer flies into a goldfish bowl, then you'll find damsel nymphs, montanas, bead buzzers and - God forgive me - eggs, will all work a treat. Some of the regulars fish the latter static under a bung which can be effective if you like your fishing to involve absolutely no thought whatsoever.

A mate of mine always does well there on an orange lure - he had over thirty fish last time out - but I think lures whilst not exactly banned, are frowned upon.

A small olive damselly/spidery job with a partridge hackle used to sort the better fish out for me - fished slow on an intermediate line.

All the best,
Matt

size 14 black buzzers of your choice - fish under a bung if you like, or fished slow on a long leader if you don't. Also, scale leader down to something like 6lb G3 fluro (0.18mm)

Hi Mike,

Try an app's bloodworm on a floater, if Bank House colours up, keep the fly high in the water.
The 8 legged varients do well on slow intermediates also.
If you use an indicator- try a pinky !.... leaded blob ..... or even a white zonker.

Thanks guys, but I went there yesterday afternoon and blanked

Perhaps it was the weather? It was very changeable: sunny and calm one minute, then breezy and raining the next.

Had a cracking ride home across the Forest of Bowland on my motorbike though! - even had 2 deer run across the road and leap a fence just in front of me

Think I'll do it again soon - but maybe leave my rod at home...

Don't be disheartened. I blanked there the first time I went - and so did a few others the last time. It does behave oddly at times - especially in sunny weather. I have only been once recently and all the fish as far as I could tell were on small flies (diawl bach and the like) although I did hook up and lose one on a black and green Montana.

As evidence of the odd behaviour - I went once the winter before last and didn't touch a fish for 3 hours on a bright and sunny day then moved to a different peg and had 7 fish in just over an hour by the simple dint of fishing a cats whisker on an intermediate line through the shade of trees on one of the islands.
Best of luck next time
GD

Thanks for those words of encouragement GD

I certainly will be going there again - I really like the place and it's an excellent ride to get there (2 hour ride, mind).
