Default Are fly fisherman ripped off?

Hi guys,
Just to clarify been fishing for 25 yrs (95% coarse fishing) but done extremely limited sea and game angling. Consider myself a fly fishing newbie once again...

It is of my opinion that the rods, reels and various tackle that is associated with fly fishing is of an inferior quality of the rod, reels and various tackle associated with coarse angling which are are at a similar price point.

I've never been coarse fishing in my life (not that I get any pride out of it, it's just a fact), so I can't compare the gear with that used for fly fishing in terms of quality.

However, I'd be inclined to say that you certainly do get more bang for your buck these days, in terms of rod build-quality. Sometimes manufacturers simply turn out a bad batch of rods, which is excusable so long as they fix any problems free of charge later. You'd expect top-notch materials to be used on a £500-600 rod, but sadly, that isn't always the case.

You get what you pay for I suppose...

Should explain I suppose..
I ordered a Vision Koma Kassette and this reel normally retails for around £65 I think..

I know they are differing types of reel and have differing objectives and uses but check out the quality of a similar priced Shimano Fixed Spool. I personally would have estimated the Komas value at £25 after feeling the quality and the much more basic gearing.

Also, whilst checking out rods at tackleshops the fittings and finish on fly rods at £100 are IMHO definetely not as good as a match rod at £100. Whether a fly rod blank is a costlier blank to build so compromises must me made on the fittings I don't know??? or perhaps they have to put a bigger markup as less people flyfish?

I would have estimated the fly rods that were £100 at around half the price.

You asked wether fly fishermen were being ripped off as opposed to coarse anglers, your above post would indicate not as much as they are!

I dont think we are ripped off, this topic is discussed quite often. Businesses need to make money they cannot pass products on without a profit. Another thing to think of is the fact you will get more enjoyment out of a fly rod than a coarse rod it is built into the blank in the factory, a litre of joy does'nt come cheap you know. JB
