Default Good flys to use in the Highlands in April when you're a novice and haven't fished since you were a kid and might be hiring a gillie for a day if the wife says it's ok.

Hi all, I'm brand spanking new here and this is my first post. I've booked a week in scotland this april, and can't justify going if I don't do some fishing. I haven't fished since i was a young teenager and was never very good at it. But I have the urge to get back into it. I'm just wondering if someone could suggest some flies to use on scottish still water trout. Bear in mind I dont know what trout eat at this time of year (except for 'flies'). Also I'm not sure about the rod I have. It's a small 4 piece, 9ft long and 3.5 oz. Do you think this is too light for loch fishing?
Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Josh H.

I didn't think a title that long was possible.

Thanks for all the positive title feedback! I'm going to Lairg in Sutherland, first time there, and I have no idea what to expect. Can't wait.

Yes that title is nearly as long as the post anyway welcome to the form Josh. If you are thinking of hiring a Ghillie then will be able to advise you on the best fly to use I wish you a very successful day when you go.

Well at this time of year your fairly limited, Loch Shin is dour and damn cold, realistically Loch Eye is your best bet. There's plenty of lochs round Lairg but none that stand out as an early season puddle. At this time of year I use a shorter rod with my 11 footer coming out around the end of June. Intermediate or sinktip line and small black flies bibio/zulu pennel etc.

PM me if you want and I'll happily do a spot of ghilliing for free.
