Welcome to the forum Carl, I have never used a sink tip but would think that seeing you are only fishing 5-8 feet of water that the sinktip would be better for your circumstances as you will still see the end of the floating part of the line for takes but someone else may contradict my thoughts.

Hi carl it pays to have an intermediate line in your bag for those days when fish are not showing and you need to get your flies down to the level in which the fish are feeding I aslo have a rio midge tip line that I use when fishing buzzers and need them to get an extra foot or 2 below surface but for the water deapth your saying I would say a floating line 9 1/2ft leader or a sink tip line thats 2ft of sink tip + 9 1/2ft of leader sounds about right
hope some one else could be a bit more clearer for you but me I would make sure that I have at least a floater, intermediate and a sinker line in my bag and then you can start to think about sink tips

Get both, there's the answer...if its really windy you can use the inter, in fact, why bother with a sink tip in that depth of water, a floater is all you would need without a strong wind! Buy a neutral density or intermediate. See Alanc, you are prophetic, i've contradicted you

Get a clear (slime) intermediate and needle knot a fluorocarbon butt piece of about 10lb to take the leader. Don't use a braided loop.

If you have a floater already then a Fast Sink Airflo Polyleader gives you an instant sink-tip - a very useful tool for small lure type flies.
