Default DO IRISH WILD TROUT LIKE CORRIB TROUT DESERVE A BIT MORE RESPECT

Lads ive read a thread in tackle talk recently

Hardy Angel II VS Orvis Helios

and I have now become aware of something.

A few weeks ago there was a thread on this forum (that i cant find now) where an angler caught a beautiful wild corrib trout. The video showed him trying to dispatch the fish with the flat of his pen knife blade

Any idea where it went.????

This is the utube video, that now seems to have the sad ending removed

Well it appears that the individual in the video is a forum member.

As you can see from the above link to the thread in tackle talk that forum member seems to be handy with this pen knife. He claims that there is no shortage of fish in corrib and that the fish have changed their feeding habits and that he has developed a newstyle of angling to catch these vast numbers of trout. He is obviously a great angler and has loads of utube videos of him catching wild irish fishing.

Ive looked thru his utube clips and cant see too many fish being released

Maybe ive missed those.

Whats your take on this guys. Is there plenty of fish in our wild irish loughs. Are there plenty for us to all kill 8 each and photograph them lying ded on the ground

Also whats your views of showing others how you Catch & Kill fish on utube for the entire world to see. It it sending out the wrong signals. It is attracting the attention of groups like PETA It posting things like this on utube just a way of seeking attention.

Dont get me wrong, I kill the odd fish for the pan, but i dispatch it properly and give it the respect its due. And I dont post things on utube.

Personally i treat all the fish i catch with the same respect be they wild Icelandic salmon or stocked rainbows from Avington. It's not the fault of the fish how they were born/raised. I take fish for the pot, but like to be able to return those i don't need. I think fishermen should be responsible in what fish they keep and humane in despaching those they do. There'll always be idiots who kill everything, and no one would condone cruelty. Without wanting to open a can of worms, i find the 'older' generation more likely to kill indiscriminately. My uncles for example simply don't understand K&R for salmon, and question my ethics for wanting a K&R ticket on grafham.

All fish we catch deserve respect and personalyl i have just found the joys of catch and release. I take one or two for the pot but like to release any others, sometimes after a quick photo etc...

Thankfully I have noticed reservoirs starting to allow release and the more pressure we apply as anglers for the others to follow suit the quicker they will.

Needlessly killing wild fish is atrocious, and as an aside any anti out there that wants to make our lives harder is being given free ammunition with those youtube videos. Take only what you need!!!

I am 100% C&R for wild brownies. If they are wild then put them back especially if they are big trout as that is the future of the breeding population - thats the way that I see things.

Yes fish do deserve more respect than that - given the amount of fulfillment that angling gives our lives apart from basic appreciation of wildlife.

Yes the stocks in the Western Loughs are under threat from many quarters - but one vast (and largely unquantified) source of mortality is rampant catch and kill everything. This is at least one thing that anglers CAN do something about.

Yes the guy obviously catches his share of fish (those nice specimens that have evaded previous catch and kill may well be those that follow feeding habits that are not widely targetted by the bulk of anglers). This does not mean that there are the same numbers of quality fish, nor that there is an endless supply of trout to be killed (you would, however, still observe good catches to small numbers of people who know how to exploit - say the remaining 10% of fish - even if you've already lost 90% of the adult population....)

It is a hell of a risk (if you are wrong - you've lost something that cannot be replaced) to assume that the way it has been done in the past is still sustainable in the age of extensive angling tourism and big increases in angler numbers

The commercial fishing industry is full of examples of fish stock collapse through over exploitation and the spawning tribs on the Corrib are under more pressure than ever before to keep supplying takeable fish to the lake......

(and piddly little spawning tribs are not very "sexy" things for people to protect from pollution, dredging, diversion, overgrazing etc. etc. etc.)

P.S. its not the "antis" that anglers need to convince - it is FIRST OF ALL - other anglers.

Why? -so that we have something to "angle" for and so that we command the basic respect of our peers.

It is also conservation groups that we have to convince that we are credible in terms of wanting to have healthy rivers and lakes in the future (rather than to fill our boots while the going is good and f*c|< the next generation of anglers when the Corrib trout has gone the way of the dodo). They can help us look after our decent fisheries if we have credibility.

We need more anglers like Nigel Crothers and his "conservation through angling" LANTRA accredited courses that he runs in schools.

Hey OO,

Dryflyfisher has placed his home movies in a few different sections:

Lough Corrib Fighting fit

Flogged to death... so to speak.

For me Corrib's just one giant snack pond, full of gastric treats.

I can hardly contain myself whilst on the drift as I always have half a loaf of Irish Pride wholegrain at the ready... no need for a net. Any fish landed, slips over the gunwale, straight onto a slice of bread to be plastered with tartar sauce as the trouts heart is still beating... A steady bite to the head usually stuns a fish over two pounds then I clear me throat and all goes down my gullet like a starved pelican. Fish after fish! I'm a f*cking human hoover, a factory belt of fish fodder. Anything undersize is lovingly slipped into the wet contents... of a sizzling pan on the old gas hob to make a fingerling fritter... christ I'm hungry, bring on the duckfly...
