Default Cheap backing?

Hi,
I have got a Vison Koma Kassette and being basically new to fly fishing am horrified by the price of backing to fill the 3 spools which I hope but probably won't ever see. (Am I being a cheapskate??)

Does anyone know where the cheapest place online to get this from is please?

Think youre better bitting the bullet and buying some m8, If youve not got it and a big fish takes you for a run youve had it. Best way to buy it is in the bulk spools, about 20 quid. Suppose if you were really desperate (or cheap) you could buy some cheap 20 pound mono and nail knot it to the fly line at the reel end, but I wouldnt advise it!!

I have heard tell, but of course wouldn't do it myself, not being a cheapskate, of folk who put a layer of string under the backing. So they spool on the line, as much backing as they think they'll never see and can afford, string to fill then put it all back in the right order. Depending on the ventilation in the spool it may even be possible to arrange that the string is invisible.

Not that I'm recommending this, mind.

Mike

Some cheap'n'cheerful thick-ish backing that may be suitable for you:

2000yd Spool of backing

and some better quality, thinner diameter fluo orange 20lb Wychwood backing

500m Fluo Orange backing

I back my 8wts out with a bulk spool of spun backing, and finish off with some better quality fine braided backing from that to my flyline.
IMHO 95% of your backing won't see the light of day.
Spend the cash you save on some decent leader material.

Cheers Craig

Have a look on eBay - I recently bought 1.2km (yes, kilometers) of 20lb backing for around £5.

However, it is not any brand name but a thread used in industrial sewing. It looks exactly the same as bog-standard backing. I am no weakling and could not break this in a straight pull..........defo 20lb in B/S if not more and relatively thin too

As it goes, I dont see anything wrong with using mono as backing either except that it may come off the spool slightly curly with memory.

Best of luck

Ben

Mullarkeys do some bulk terylene backing. I've used it for years with no problem.

Up to some 20 years ago, we (over here) were (almost) all using a normal fishing monofilament as backing. That is the cheapest option and it works. I still use it on one of my reels. You can change it each year if you are affraid of its decay etc. But that would have to be some decay, that a 0.35mm or thicker, would snap sooner than 0.15. Of course capacity is not such as with some gel spun etc. but let`s be realistic, even if you are going to see your backing, it is going to be a relatively short lenght of it.
