Default Leader turnover help please

Hi
Whilst out fishing today, I stuck on an emerger as there seemed to be a hatch on- loads of fish topping and feeding on or just below the surface. Anyway, when casting I was having problems with leader turnover. It was fine when I was using a nymph but when I put the dry on it wouldn't turnover properly - I was using 5lb stroft by the way.

Would a tapered leader have helped or was it my sh*t casting?

Cheers

I allways use tapered leaders when dry flying, I use the rio ones and never had trouble with turn over. I,m going to make my own this year as they are getting to expensive. Are you fishing 5lb straight through

Ask yourself whether perfect turnover absolutely necessary when fishing the dry?

My answer would be no.

Hi mate, because the dry is lighter it doesn,t cut through the air like a heavier fly does especially if casting into wind. On your forward cast try trapping your flyline between your finger and the handle just before the flyline has unfurled, this stop the flyline in its tracks but allows the leader and fly to turn over well. Might just need a bit more speed on the forward cast.
Nothing wrong with 5lb stroft, have used it myself all the way through with no problems, anyway where,ve you been fishing and did you catch, cheers ck.

Hi mate
how is it going? I was a clegg hall today and had a couple of nice 'bows. They were topping like mad, loads of rises. You should get down and have a fish. Where have you been?
