Default River Nidd Harrogate / Knaresborough

Hi all, hope you can help an amature finish off the season with a fish or two. The problem is, my father-law is coming to visit and I have told him about the great fishing on t'nidd! I might have to prove myself, however, I do fish the river and succesfully but this is in the milder weather. Having fished in colder times my success rate plummets!! Locally, the river holds lots of fish including some nice Grayling. I am a novice but have had success fishing the New Zealand method rather than a team of flies (casting space is limited and a bit awkward)

Can anyone suggest fly patterns for this River and this time of year please. My aim is simple, to help father-in-law catch trout or grayling, the resulting shame would be unbearable!!!

Many thanks in advance,

Bill

When are you fishing? Yorkshire grayling season ends on 14 March doesn't it? I thought the trout season didn't start until 1 April, that's certainly the case on the Nidderdale water

Regatds

Hi and thanks very much for this very important reply.

Well, being the novice I am, I wasn't sure about the season dates. I have checked the web and found conflicting dates so I called the Environment Agency last night and the man said fly fishing for trout/grayling ends 31st March! I was going to call again tomorrow to check this but I did say I am in Knaresborough and hoped to fish the Nidd close to the town centre.

Last thing I want to do is take my father-in-law on a river and get us both into trouble.

Any further info regarding this would be greatfuly recieved.

Many thanks again,

Bill

Bill

I'm an exiled Yorkshireman in the deep south so I might be wrong with my dates. I am a member at Nidderdale though and our grayling season ends on 28 Feb and the trout season starts on 1 April. I know that other clubs close for grayling on 14 March. The bloke from the EA clearly hasn't a clue, the trout season finished on 30 Sep!

I suggest you give Orvis in Harrogate a ring, they should be able to help you.

Regards

Peter

Thought we kicked off on the 25th bruce? with so many regional trout season starting date variation it does get a little confusing at times.

Thumbs up

Thanks Peter and Bruce for your information. I am glad I have checked, can you imagine my embarrasment being caught out!!

You know what this means though guys? I have to find another form of entertaining father-in-law, perhaps the pubs locally serving such good ales could be a good second

I look forward to the new season then, if the hang over has subsided by then.

Cheers once again,

Bill

Out of all the days in a year you can go fishing in Yorkshire you invited your Dad up during the brief period you can't fish a river whatsoever.
