Default GM Rainbow Trout. Coming soon (?)

Mutated genetic supertrout developed in lab ? The Register

Interesting that they mention a "blue" cow with more muscle mass than a normal animal. I wonder if something similar has happened when the "Blue" trout was being bred.

They will have a long way till they manage to beat the fight off of the fish at Harelaw.

I don't have a blanket opposition to GM, but those are some ugly critters.

Alot of genetic modification coverage tends to decend into Frankenstein messing with nature territory. Every domesticated crop or animal is actually the result of crude genetic modification based on artificial selection.

And whispering in their ears
Give them unquiet dreams;
Leaning softly out
From ferns that drop their tears
Over the young streams.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.

Couldn't agree more mate. People have been "genetically engineering" animals ever since they realised that by mating the best two you got the better offspring. The difference with the modern technique is just that it is a damned sight quicker and more selective at the genetic level. You can selectively alter just a single base pair of DNA or add a single gene to achieve your desired effect.

I would not say this makes it right to do so however, this is an entirely different ethical debate which i am not brave enough to comment on lol.

They're like out of condition Rainbows which have been crossed with spawning pink salmon.

Aint really anything new.
Dever Springs and Avington did something simillar in early 80's thus producing massive rainbow and brown trout.
Most if not all stocked rainbow trout nowadays are triploid, which means they have been "genetically modified" to be "non sexed" neither male nor female.
Farmed salmon in particular have been subjected to these growth modifications for years.

bert .

Default DISTURBING VIEWING !!!!!!

THAT WASN'T PRETTY VIEWING!!! THOSE FISH LOOKED AWFULL, CLEARLY WEREN'T FIT AND HEALTHLY NOT TO MENTION SUPER UGLY. THE FISH HARDLY MOVED WHEN TAKEN OUT IN A NET, NOT MY CUP OF TEA, I HOPE THEY DON'T START GETTING STOCKED INTO STILL WATERS AND RESERVOIRS

Inducing triploidy is a pretty simple, low tech operation resulting in a gross chromosome abnormality and sterility. Compared to creating transgenic animals, it's the difference between modifying an engine with a lump hammer to stop it working and modifying it by remapping the ECU to make it more powerful.

kenster, i believe a lot of the fish you saw in the video were atleast partly anaesthatised (i think thats what the smaller tanks were for) explaining why they were not moving much, but i may be wrong. Have to agree though the double muscle mass makes them butt ugly.
