Default River Wharfe , Pool

Im planning a couple of outings down there this year, any hints and tips are greatly appreciated.

my knowledge so far in fly fishing has been stockies down here in yorkshire, and also salmon fishing up in scotland. All my river experience has been of the " down and across" variety, Cheers for your help in advance

Generally, get as close as you can to your fly (short casts). Cast upstream and fish the "dead drift" back towards you/across your body as your standard approach with either nymphs or dries.

Use dry flies to target rising fish (try to work out what is being taken by the fish)

Search for areas of refuge from the main force of the current that border on to faster (food and oxygen carrying) current. In these areas, either fish with nymphs (slim and weighted with tungsten beads - not brass beads) or large bushy dry flies.

If you have a traditional wet fly (e.g. North Country spider) on the dropper with your nymph setup - fish it first dead drift before allowing it to come onto the "hang" downstream.

DON'T wait to feel the take when fishing dead drift - you must keep perfect "contact" between your rod tip, fly line tip and point fly (in that order!) and watch the end of the fly line for any suspicious stops/checks in movement.

Good luck!

Default Yorkshire waters

Hi Mike, I have never fished Pool, only driven over it many times, I would be interested in how you find it. However it is a big river and you may be better off starting on somewhere which is not quite as open and affected by wind etc and where you can see things happen relatively easily. Nidderdale Anglers have some really good water on the Nidd which is great for a relative newcommer like myself, and it is not expensive at @£100 ish for the season, or via day tickets. Spiders, klinkhammers and nymphs all work really well and there are some surprisingly big fish in smaller rivers like the Nidd.

If you are interested please pm me or go to their website, I hope this is of interest and you give it a try, the upper stretches around Wath are in some areas of fantastic scenery.

Regards

Sammo

Hi Sammo, thanks for the advice, the wharfe at pool is just kinda handy with me living in bradford. And the size doesnt really bother, was brought up fishing one of the widest rivers in scotland ( the ness )

mike, (presume ya names mike)

theres no rhyme or reason for any weight rod/line ,a friend of mikgee and myself uses an 8# for bugging and spiders its only personal choice and fatigue that decrees the use of lighter outfits , the only thing i will say is that when your bugging for grayling you generally hold the rod out at arms length and a heavier outfit will obviously tire your arm quicker but if you get into it you can always purchase another outfit in time for it ,so in short yes your 6# will do ,if you decide when your going let me know and if i can make it i will come down with you
