Default Lough Ree

Does anyone here fly fish the trout out on Ree ??? Is not a Lough we hear that much about but has fine fish .

I have just heard one of the pike boys has trout of 10lb , 4 @ 6lb and a 5lb plus
in 2 days last week

Thinking about maybe having a bash at it out there so any stories or info would be great please .......

Cheers

Like you say S T iv not heard of it being a trout mecca but suppose there could be a head of trout in there, but like lough Alan I would think its looked more upon as a course fish area being part of the Shannon system up our end.
I'm willing to bring my boat down in April if you want to give it a day though, as there are trout in most waters.

There was an article in T&S last year about the improving fishing on Lough Ree.

I've enquired a bit about this water, and I was told it gets a fairly decent mayfly hatch. The article was quite upbeat about the lough's progress, I will try and dig it out.

Hi MM , I don't think the head of trout is an issue to be honest , from what I have heard and found out it seems fairly good and getting better all the time . What I was wondering is was any area better than others or is it just a case of tackling it the same way as any of the Limestone Loughs ???

PM on the way .........

Fished it one day during the mayfly last year and the year before. Blanked the first year as did most of our party and only managed a small fish on dries the second. It is a massive expanse of water which would be daunting to people unfamiliar with the lake. we did see some huge fish moving though. Wouldnt mind another crack at it this year.

I haven't fished it myself but I have spoken to some people who have and when conditions are right it has great spent mayfly fishing for huge trout. Early season it can be fished with wet fly in the shallows. Large dabblers and fry imitations.

The article in TandS was by Dennis Moss and he had a nice fish (3ib?) on mayfly dun pattern as far as i can remember. He recommended the lake for those who want to get away from the crowds.

There has never been any doubt as to Ree holding large numbers of trout , however they concentrate on the coarse fish for their food as far as I know and thats not every fly mans cup of tea.

Beware it is one of irelands widest unbroken stretch of water and when the wind gets up from the west (as it usually does) it can develop huge waves. Its also knicknamed "rock ree" I'll let you work that out for yourself . Best of luck I've always wanted to fish it but never got round to it.

I fished it last year in the spent, had 2 fish, best was just under 4lb. Wouldn't be anything special for Ree. Can fish well in April on wets, from what I'm told the flies are generally tied on size 8's and in the mayfly on longdshank 8's. There are some massive fish on it but as said previously its a huge lake.
