Default Hardys lifetime guarantee?

My local tackle dealer showed me the latest directive from Hardys today.

Quote all replacements for broken rods will now be charged at £70 per section!!!

Ouch.... will stick to my Sages, thanks Hardy but no thanks.

Oh and Greys are now £45 per section.

It's about time some manufacturers dropped the lifetime guarantee and just started quoting the price for a replacement section.................

£70! That is ridiculous.

A friend of mine will not be best pleased he stepped on his Swift when we were fishing for Grayling.

Just checked their web site out:
Charging Structure

£25 handling, administration and return postage and packing charge (per claim).
PLUS
10% of the current, or last, Recommended Retail Price of the rod (per section, per claim).
Hardy & Greys Limited reserves the right to alter the handling charge without prior notice.

Its a disgrace , there will be a few rod builders will get a bit of work , its also £70 per section so if you break a 4 piece rod £280 , you can get a new rod for that or a bloomin good second hand one

Maybe it will stop people ripping the p1ss when they damage a rod and expect it to be replaced? No other product is this service expected from.

If a rod breaks due to poor workmanship or factory fault then it should be replaced FOC, no quibbles, but why should the manufacturer replace it when you walk into a wall or stand on it? Yes some rods are a lot of money but they really ought to get rid of this "lifetime guarantee" stuff.

You wouldn't expect Mercedes to replace the car after you've rolled off the road into a field.

IMO

I have a hardy swift mk2 great rod but i will not be buying another hardy even if i win the lotto because of the stupid price we are now being quoted for a broken section it is just daylight robbery. Why do they not just get rid of the lifetime warranty, make the rod cheaper then maybe they could get away with charging £70+, i only said maybe

One can dream

They should just drop the lifetime guarantee rubbish. Say covered for manufacture defect for life. If you break a rod and want it repaired you pay for it. Simples. Or sell an optional anytime breakage replacement, just like buying an insurance policy.

Default Accidents do happen

Ten years ago I bought my first saltwater fly rod a sage RPLXi.

I had the choice of a number of brands ranging from budget to high end models. My tackle dealer advised me that if I caught the bonefish bug like many of his customers have I would be likely to be hopping in and out of skiffs, tripping over submerged slippery rocks, falling down mini craters plus many other hazzards that await the unwary. In short buy a rod with a genuine lifetime guarantee.

I now own a selection of saltwater and freshwater rods all Sage.

Often I set out with four rods set up, a Tarpon, a Permit and two bonefish rods one with a quiet taper and one with a rocket taper to suit the conditions that await me.

During the past ten years I like others have suffered breakages, one in transit (all four sections, thanks Virgin ), a couple tripping whilst walking or clambering , one a factory fault on the second false cast using a brand new model , one bullying a small jack whilst Permit were still tailing forty feet away and a section broken in the boat whilst general mayhem was taking place.

In each and every case Sage replaced the broken sections at no cost to myself without quibble without postage or admin charges.

One of the rods has recieved damage on three occasions, my original five piece RPLXi is still going strong. Saltwater flyfishing is extremely demanding on the angler and tackle alike so to me the choice of brand is simply a no brainer.

Well done Sage, thanks for great rods, great service with life insurance included in the price.

Default bottom line

the huge price of the rod in the first place hardy etc has to have a built in failure factor else somone is not doing their job.

Hence the thing £500 plus a rod you are effectively paying for 3-4 rods to cover the life time warrantee. Else the whole finacial model is flawed.

We know rod just dont cost £500 when you can get cheaper ones for under £50.

Maybe anglers should stick with the £60 range once rod breaks buy a new one. Everyon knows where they stand. the profit margin on £60 rod is slight I wander how many of the "big names" would be around if anglers adopted this approach?
