Default Which flies foe which time of year?

Although I have been flyfishing for a few years now, I have mainly fished with lures and large damsels. I am now at the stage where i want to try the finer art of fly fishing and use more immitative patterns. E.g Buzzers, Diawl Bach's, PTN, GRHE and the sort.

Can anyone give me any advice on what kind of patterns work well at different times of the year? Perhaps a certain team of flies work best?

Thanks

Adam

Helloe ahl09, welcome to the forum.

Massive subject that IMHO? One I wouldn't know where to begin with anyway! Perhaps needs narrowing down a bit?

Probably why no-one has answered you - try using the search function above and ask it some questions that might suit 'summer lake flies', 'spring river flies' etc and you'll see what I mean, there's loads of discussions on here - enjoy it.

As Spashtest has rightly pointed out, you can, (and many have) write a book on this subject. fly choice varies on any number of factors, not limited to:

time of year
temperature
weather
river? Lake? size?
Stocked? Wild?
Rainbow? Brown?
Size of fish
wind
river/lake bed material
location
Personal preference.

So as you can imagine there's quite a lot to discuss. your best bet is to ask around before you go fishing, and get advice then, or enjoy trawling through the threads on here.

Cheers
Alex

Adam

For most stillwaters

Spring - Buzzers
Summer - Buzzers
autumn - Buzzers
Winter - Buzzers

All year round 90% of the trouts diet are midge larvae. Imitations are Superglue variety, diawl bach, cruncher, cdc emerger. All used to fish at various depths.

generally super glue or spanflex buzzer - point fly or cdc if using washing line
diawl bach/Cruncher - middle dropper
Cruncher/diawl bach/ cdc - top dropper

then again I might just be biased....
