I agree that stocks on Corrib are not delapated as others suggest. The fish are feeding differently, most likely as a direct result of the explosion of weed growth in the lake, which will surely result in more crustatians, snails, etc. so the fish are in my opinion feeding down deep or at the bottom... Why come up after some small flies?
The above is purely an opinion. I don't have evidence of this as honestly i have done **** on Corrib the past couple of seasons, although i didn't fish during the mayfly last season when the fish were, i hear at least, looking upwards and nailing mayfly on the surface. I fished corrib last april for 5 days without hardly seeing a free rising fish. I may have seen one or two, but not many. I didn't take many fish on my 10 or so days out last season, mainly fishing wets, which may be why... I would like if you could elaborate on your theory as to how people should be fishing. You mentioned fishing light tippet with dries, but that would most likely just be effective during the mayfly? There are so few fish on the surface during the early part of the season it would obviously be pointless. Please enlighten me.. Are you talking buzzer fishing purely? Honestly it kinda bores me... but i may have to resort to it

Cheers
JJ

I have released 99% of fish i have taken over the past few years, and definately don't condone killing big trout on Corrib as was posted on here last week.

Fish will follow the feeding, the Corrib comes alive in the early morning, late evening,if the fly and conditions are right. Why would they bother feeding through the day, while they fish have easy pickings during the late and early hours of the day and without the pressure of boats,a 3lb plus average is common in certain parts during these hours.Saying all that,i would not agree that the Corrib is fighting fit,it sadly has its problems too, just similar to most off the great loughs.

I don't know, whilst fair enough it like any other lake has it's problems, we were plagued with small fish last Augest/September on the dries. This can only be a good thing to see so many and I mean a huge amount of small wild fish 1/4-1/2 lb in weight, even caught a tiny silver salmon par on a sedge too.

I fished alot on it last year and only had 2 bad days.

From what I am hearing Mask is in a worse situation.

There is no doubt that stocks are at an all time low.I make my living on the Lough, thank God I am lucky to have between 100 and 150 days work out there each season and I can see that stocks are low.The only practices people need to change is there attitude to killing fish. Each year the western board do a boat count on Lough Corrib last year over 2000 boats were moored on the lake, this excludes all the visiting anglers who bring boats every weekend. Of this figure if 2 anglers fish from each boat and they in turn catch 10 fish each per season (not a big bag)this equates to 40,000 adult fish each year, the system just can not support this.
I know catch and release is practiced but remember many anglers who kill trout kill many more than the above mentioned 10 per rod.
The other thing with regard to changing practices is: we all now fish with light rods, fine leeder, imitative fly patterns, big fast engine's,electric engines, mobile phones etc, etc.I know if I were a Trout I would much more fancy my chances of survival 10 years ago.

and how many fish are killed in your boat every year??? are you one of these gillies that travells all over the lake in search of big fish for you clients.....

There have alwasy been anglers coming to the corrib, you are correct in what you say fast engines, mobile phones etc are only partly to blame, gillies travelling to certain areas fishing it to death then moving off, i have also seen gillies making phone calls when the fishing is good in one area then suddenly there are a dozen boat fishing in that area.

out of the 12,000 - 18,000euro you make in a year from the corrib how much do give back to benifit the lake or the WPG????

I enjoy my days on the Corrib, I don't eat fish and I return nearly all that i catch (local competition would be one of the only days that a legal fish is not released)

Default Well said Breac orga

Not much more to say than that!! If you kill 40,000 fish a year how the H*** do you expect the system to flurish????. What do you think would happen if most of those fish were returned.....next year might be better eh? Fishing pressure is immense (never more so and increasing).....you just can't keep taking and expect no consequence
