Default Minkie/Zonker Problems Today

Hello all Was out today from half 8 til 5 i managed a big 1 and 6 lost with loads of bites just **** hook ups! i landed my only at about half 2pm. Problem was only thing the trout would take were my lime green zonks and all but one i lost or no hook up. How can i go around this as i tried to shorten the tail then it wouldn't sit right or get another bite so i switched back to normal length and bites again, Frustrating but fun i even tried useing the exactly same coloured lures and nothing couldn't get my head round it!

Vinny

Vary your retrieve Vin, if they are tap tapping then speed up a bit and they may well hammer it.

If you are already pulling fast and they keep missing, stop then twiddle slowly then speed up again and then they may hammer it.

Hi Vinnie,
Sound advice, as ever, from The Pirate, but another tactic worth a try is to ignore the taps and tweaks and simply continue the retrieve (after all, you know that you have their attention). I find that this often results in a good solid take eventually.
Cheers,
Angus

This sounds very much like recently introduced stock fish, the replies are good but I'd suggest, as I think these are soft mouthed stockies, try tying yor flies on thinner gauge wire hooks and take the barb off.
If your minkies are tied on the same hooks as my minkies, the hooks struggling to penetrate!

Sharpen the hook , progressively shorten the tail and keep on pulling - they don't know it's only rabbit !

Make a tandem rig and use that.....That usually works for me..

then same suggestions as before......twiddle pull twiddle, mess then about and induce the take..

or pull hard and fast....they'll lock up sooner or later...

---------- Post added at 04:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:22 PM ----------

pulling well is a bit like driving a car.....at 20mph you crash and you'll walk away (with any luck)....same as a slow pull...often the fish will bump off.

But at 70mph a crash will be fatal...same as pulling.....hard and fast and the chances are you'll set the hook well enough when they hit the fly...

Forget a tandem rig, why pussy foot about, a set of trebles would be better.
Seriously, if it's a small water, you'll not be allowed to use them.
So, please check first.
Try tying the Minkie short too, it may well work.
