Default Time to kick off the season ?

Time is a bit precious at the moment, and i'd rather not visit my normal fly fishing spot if the river is dead.

I fish the Mulcair , near Cappamore, Limerick.

Would rather wait a few weeks if needs be, but the river opened in mid feb.

Its been a nasty winter, and tempetarures this week are going from -3 at night, to about 9 degrees during the day.

I've never fished this early in the season, but on the info given above, do the experienced river fisherman think that trout will be back feeding and catchable this early in the year - many rivers in Ireland dont open till March 17th....

Thanks

I've been fishing a few times already in North Cork (only a couple of miles south of yourself) and there's been decent hatches of LDO's, even on opening day between midday and 4pm and a good number of fish rising. The hatches seem to peak around 1-2.30/3.00. Have caught a good few fish (all on dries, size 16 dark olive paraduns and cdc comparaduns). It's not May/June style non-stop action but definately worth a trip to the river for. Go for it.

As far as I remember it was 4 degrees on opening day, 9 degrees last Saturday was balmy by comparison (went out for a couple of hours before the rugby).

Up here in the North of England I'll be out on opening day I expect unless clients prove to be suddenly forthcoming with work. I won't expect to catch much until early- mid April. But I'm hoping to be surprised. I said at the local tackle shop that I might try a new tactic for early season with a snappy poodle sculpin or woolly ****** (no fly this early). I had a few looks which were a bit like someone had sworn in church......

One way or another I will be out fishing on opening day although thats three weeks of around here.

Infact I have already tied up the drys that I would hope to do the business early in the season, Red tag sizes 16 and 18 and treacle parkin in the same sizes, These little fancy flies always work for me. It cant come around soon enough its been a long winter
