Default Greys GRXi 7ft - What weight line?

I've just obtained a 3-piece GRXi 7ft rod, rated #2/3, for small stream fishing, and was wondering what line to get for it. The only DT line that I currently have for river work is a DT4F, which I use on various 8 and 9ft rods rated as #4/5. (For lake/reservoir work, I use WF5F lines).

Using the same premise, I would assume that a DT2F would be a good match, but not having any experience of Greys rods, I'm not sure.

Could anyone advise me?

I have the exact same rod! I use a DT#3, weight line on the small streams!

Try your 4# line with the GRXi, as long as you do not get too much line in the air you might find it ok? Small streams do not need long casts? I fish a 6ft 2# with a DT3# line and it is superb.

I can't speak to experience with a 3 weight. I use a Hardy's DT 2F with mine and can comfortably get 20 yards on a cast should I need it - not that that's very often. It loads comfortably for short casts with the same line.
I have a number of Grey's rods and when they are dual rated I tend to use them with the lighter line.

I have the same rod - very nice little thing which I find perfect for tiny streams. However, I find it a bit stiff and unresponsive with a #2 DT - a #3 makes the rod much more responsive. I must admit, for really tight spaces I use a #5 DT to load it up really quickly on a very short line.

What line are you using ? It may be that with such a light rod a slight variation in line weight has a large effect.

The #3 is a PP job - the #2 is (I think) a Greys "Creek Tip". The #5 was an awful Airflo, now replaced with a PP.

The #2 workes fine, as long as you can get 7-10 yards out, which is not often bearing in mind the sorts of rivers that people tend to fish with them. I find the #5 allows me to flick a cast out in one go on tiny streams, although of course the presentation can be less than delicate, so it does not suit all purposes.

By the way - had a 19" wild river brown on my GRXi 7' #2/3, Pfleuger Trion reel and a 2lb tippet which had me down to the backing several times - this great little rod performed lke a true star and absorbed every lunge and headshake. Use with confidence!
