Default Best beginners outfit

its asked a lot so i think it would be usefull to have a go at putting together a solid beginners outfit, here's mine........

everyone will have differerent opinions on this but i dont think recommending a rod without a line that suits it to a tee to a beginner helps much in the long run so here is one i use.

Fladen vantage 8' 4 weight so its rivers i guess, about 20 quid on ebay, the other ones in the range are not so hot, mine works nice with a #5WF snowbee..30 quid ish from grommit on here last time i got one, might be a bit more now, leeda profil reels are nice, 2 spare spools and largish arbour..25 quid on ebay

80 quid ish?, dont skimp on leaders though, fish see that bit.

Sorry Zoomer but this is not good advice imho.

Solid beginners casting or fishing outfit?

25% of budget on rod, 37.5% on line and 31.25% on reel?

Think you got this a bit mixed up mate.

Re not skimping on leader material, what are you suggesting, £20.00 on a 100m spool of Grand Max with this kit?

The Pirate.

Default starterish kit

My view

TFO professional series £99 ish. Can be found cheaper.. I think.... (forgiving action to aid the first time casters and improvers alike)
Leeda profil + spare spools - £30
Pirate or bario lines (does not matter if begginers trash it at their prices!) 15-20 each

Sizes dependant upon application

For £140 they will have an outfit that they will not need to change as they improve. More cost effective in the long run.

Time for the holes to be picked in that lot

I know so many chaps that have their first (and last) set up locked under the stairs never to see the light of day again.

I always ask them why and the answer is always 'never took to it' or 'naw it’s not for me'.

The fact is very few float watchers and alarm listeners enjoy fishing on the hoof. I split most fishermen into those who like to wait for the fish to come to them or the ones who like to hunt them down.

I am the latter and although new to the fly, I have only ever truly enjoyed beach casting, spinning and now, fly fishing.

The best piece of advice I was given when I started was borrow your first outfit or buy cheep and see if you are going to enjoy it. If you love it, it won’t be long before you are trolling the tackle shops looking for the best gear you can afford. Even a £50 set up is wasted under the stairs.

try it out, my usual is helios 9' 5 weight and sage reel, same line as above, i have tried most known brands, this was just an example, im independant and try them, im sure others will have other combinations, the line balances the fladen rod well, that counts for 90% of the performance, the reel is just the cheapest one i like.

you cant buy based on percentages and im not suggesting expensive leader material, decent tapered leaders just,

dont get me wrong, the 5 weight fladen i wouldnt recommend only the combination i would enjoy using myself, point is, i wish someone had told me these things before i believed the utter nonsence you get in fishing catalogues, after a few posts beginners will see a pattern form.

Is this some form of bumping again ?

i) Where's the poor devil likely to be fishing?
ii) Sensible advice such as as cheap as you can get it off of ebay or wherever
in case he/she just doesn't take to it !
iii) I've fished with Granddad's rods/reels /tackle - you can start with damned near anything and still catch trout !

The important thing is to start , not to screw the poor devils out af as much as you can .

Me , I'd make them buy all Shakespeare ( honest gear) cheap as chips stuff - but as I've worked for them for 28 years - you'd expect me to !

Odyssey Rod , Cheap SKP multiplier reel , Odyssey backing , Odyssey fly line

Whole lot brand new around £70 max depending on who is seriously desperate and doing deals ! Use eBay or Google !

Aim beginners into spending money kicking and screaming - they need the money for the lessons and the fishing trips !
