Default West Yorkshire Fly Fishing Clubs

Can anyone recommend any fly-fishing clubs local to my home in Wakefield, West Yorkshire?

I have recently returned to fly-fishing after a considerable break and I am in effect starting afresh. I've had a couple of lessons to remind myself of the basics and hope to have my first river fishing lesson very soon. I think that a club would be a good opportunity for me to increase my learning and it may also give me access to other waters; I've been using some pretty low-quality ponds which are ideal for casting practice (which I need in spades) but which are not the most inspirational places.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Default Wakefield Book

Hi, like you i am relatively new to fly fishing but practised on the River Calder At Horbury & River Dearne at Barnsley. Both on the Wakefield book plus a free stretch on the Dearne. Nobody around to embarrass my self with (not that i gave a toss when i did) I have had some really nice Brownies from both rivers, even supprised myself with a few chub & decent perch on the wets. Waterton (Walton Hall) aint too bad in the summer evenings to practice from the boat, plus theres nearly always someone around to give a bit of friendly advice. Roll on April 1. Tight lines

Not really fly fishing clubs, but Bradford No1, Halifax & Ryburn and Brighouse AA all have rights to upper reaches of the Calder which has some fantastic Trout and Grayling fishing. Books for the latter too are excellently priced at £20 - £25.

Default Wharfe

Yep i agree with you on the bradford No1 book, good value for money. My brother pays £300 a year to fish the Wharfe higher up at Bolton abbey, yet ive taken bigger fish at Addingham. He obviously doesnt think fish swim up or downstream.

Hi winegums - welcome to the forum.

Tonight the Yorkshire Gamefishers Society have their monthly event at Ossett Cricket Club. Not far from Wakefield and members from many different Yorkshire clubs. Tonight's speaker is Ian Oates talking about River keeping.

Along with the Bradford No 1 club, Bradford City will also be worth a look.

As a newbie who has just come over from the dark side (the match scene really was making me miserable) , thanks for the infomation on the Bradford book , there really is a lack of trout around Pontefract , unless there some in the park lake

Hi Guys,
I live at Ossett and would happily join you locally for a bit of fly fishing. Drop me a mail if you are interested.

Not too far away from Wakefield is http://www.flyfishingwharncliffe.co....0fly%20fishery
It's not heavily stocked but it's a quiet, peaceful, friendly place to wet a line.
