Bris
BiBio or Zulu with 1/2" marabou tail. Small size 12 or 14 if you can tie em that small. Sinktip, cast far, retrieve rapid, lift vertical and hang for a few seconds.

The Undertaker(basically a Black Baby Doll with silver rib)or Green Pea lure
and Viva.Other than that look at the traditional Scottish flies. You should get a good
response for this thread.

Bris,
I would point out that sinking lines are not the best option for wild Brown trout in Scottish lochs during March/early April. I would suggest that you concentrated on a floating line.

During March and April, the majority of Brown Trout feeding activity will be in the shallows. The shallows are where the first growths of algae will start to kick off and therefore where the first activity from invertabrate life (trout food) will occur. The areas of deeper water will not have the light penetration of the shallows and therefore will not have the algae/invertabrate activity that will be found there later in the year; activity that pulls in the Brownies.

As for flies; black and claret are the colours to concentrate on. A typical three fly cast would be Black Pennell, Kate McLaren and Mallard and Claret.

Hi Bris, early season brown are hungry creatures. To be honest they are nor really 'on', in the Borders certainly until May. However I have fished some of the hill lochs and took plenty of decent browns, 1lb sometimes more on an intermediate line and black lures. Don't pussy foot about either, they like a mouthful. Wooly ****** or black Tadpoles will out-fish smaller flies, for bigger trout certainly.
I hope this helps…

thanks for that good piece of advice , its guys like yourself that us learners love to spend time chatting to ,and this very statement you have given has brought back memories of a time when i would walk the banks of Walton dam and the other dams in the Barrhead area early season with my older brother ,,and i would see fish crashing the shore line and would always think it was pike chasing small bait fish , but i was soon put right by my older brother who would point out it was one of the times he loved fishing for the brown in these waters as it was a good time for some great sport and he would always say to me toughen up on your leaders as they are going to hit hard, not that i took many browns from these waters.

so thanks for the reminder.

i will be watching this thread with hope that the fantastic amount of knowledge on the forum may be shared even more ,,, god I'm greedy .
