Default Total Fly fisher and steve cullen

Talk about sending out a mixed message, just read the latest TFF and on reading steve cullen's article on C&R I am amazed to see he says ""At no time during the netting and unhooking process should the fish leave the water" then goes on to explain the best method for photographing a fish as follows "Lift the trout out of the water, but not too high" lmfao what a contradiction in terms. the magazine should make it's mind up what it's stance is on C&R.

Good point but didn't realize the mag had an opinion on C&R

great magazine and a good guy steering the ship, probably worded badly, but im sure with wet hands a fish held for a photograph is fine and then released,

well done steve, great magazine mate

I whole heartedly agree with you BB, but to put contradictions into print like that is not a good idea. A lot of beginners use these publications to learn or advance their knowledge and this can only be seen as a bad move on the mags/steves part.

Wilma and wull of Alderneuk fishery often lift big fish out the net for a photograph done right there is no harm to fish, what should never be done on C&Rwaters and i have seen it,
is fish netted on to the bank hooked removed and then returned.

I haven't read the aricle but could it be he is referring to compulsory catch and release waters when advocating not removing the fish from the water? Whereas the photo advice is not?

I really don't see your confusion If you are practising 'pure' C&R, then keep the fish in the water. If you want to take a picture, be quick, be careful. Where's the mixed message

I agree scratch but to be honest i like to have a quick look at the fish before i put them back ,
i think more emphasis should be put into the handling of fish either for photos or unhooking and releasing, ,

ill pm you later bud,

Steve's normally on here but is expecting an addition to the family very imminently so may not see this for a while.

I am sure he will wish to respond himself.
