Default Wader Advice

Hi,

I plan on starting some river fishing this year but my local river has some sections that are only passable by wading. I need to get a set of waders but I am not really sure what to look for. Are there any advantages to stocking foot over boot foot? Also are breathable better than neoprene? Any advice would be appreciated. Also if you know of any good deals on waders at the minute, feel free to post a link, Thanks,

Robbie

my 2pence worth is that if you get breathables and its cold you can always layer up. You get neoprenes of even cheap nylons on a hot day and you cant cool down. And they soon become unbearable.
I use Dan Baileys because I cant afford Simms any more. Waders though seem like a fashion item though and every season sees new one's and also means that usually there are some on sale somewhere. You should find a bargain.
Oh and I prefer seperate boots My wading boots have been going now through three pairs of waders and are as comfy as ever.
Now watch how many disagree with me..............

I just got a pair of these. There are loads going for the same price in all different sizes on ebay.

I'm no expert but I think breathables are better in summer as neoprene aren't breathable and you sweat like a pig. But with breathables in winter you need base and mid layers to keep warm.
Plus with stockingfoot and wading boots I feel like I can feel things better under the foot.

I'd recommend Orvis, I've had one or two pairs spring a leak but their warranty and customer services are 100% bomb-proof.

Hi Robbie,
I've been on same trail for 2 months and got it sorted yesterday. My decision was made on the basis of being able to try them on in a shop and being given reassurances if the things leak under normal use, whatever that may be. The trying on part was essential to an odd shaped bloke like me as the brand I went for had 3 or 4 ranges. Medium in 1 range was totally different from medium in another both in length and 'girth'.
Anyway, I was sorted in the end and well pleased!
Sadly the shop's no use to you; Rib Valley in Hertfordshire, but if anyone else needs a hand, they are real helpful.
Cheers,
Del.

I asked a similar question a few weeks back and got some good advice...
In the end I went for these Stockport Fly Fishing Supplies Waders and Boots
Scierra CC4's and I got the Vision Emerger II boots at half price too. I had some great prices from Grommit on these forums, I would give him a shout for a start. Not worn them yet though only pounced round the house in them which gave the missus and my daughter a laugh.

Are you ready for the "Manc" Compo?

[QUOTE=whingingpom;651690] I use Dan Baileys because I cant afford Simms any more.

Pom, how do you go on, if the Dan Baileys do spring a leak.
I have heard good reports about them, but if it's a postage job back to the states, then that's a no no for me.
I am with chilli on this, Orvis all the way, they will leak, as all waders will, but when they do, a new pair arrive next day and no questions asked.
I need 100% back up during the season.

On the subject of good deals, Orvis have the ProGuide 3's on sale for about £200 at the moment. If you have a friend or relative in the US (as I do) who can act as your shipping intermediary, you can get them for the equivalent of less than £170.

Given their hassle-free repair/replacement policy, I considered this money well spent.

Yes, stocking foot waders give better ankle support and are generally more comfortable because the boots fit and feel more like hiking boots than wellies. You also have the advantage of being able to replace the waders without replacing the boots.

The only advantages to boot foot waders are that they are faster to put on and there are insulated models available where the entire foot is fully insulated which is essential for very cold weather. You, however, don't get cold weather where you are, so this won't be of any advantage.

Breathables are infinitely better than neoprenes for all around wear. Just remember that breathables are not bullet-proof. Relatively speaking most models are less puncture resistant than the old style waders, so you can't just go plowing through whatever is in your path and expect them to last.

Neoprenes only enjoy an advantage if you spend a lot of time wading deep and in cold water. For example, for early spring salmon or steelhead they are essential.
