Default Anyone Done Tierra Del Fuego?

I have a serious itch to fish the Rio Grande for those unbelievable sea trout. Needless to say i'm going to have to save for a while so it'll be 2012 realistically but i was wondering if anyone had any experience of it? what are the catch numbers you could realistically expect for a week? Is there a real or outside chance of a 20 pounder? Where's the best place to go? all the usual stuff. any advice greatly appreciated so i can start saving and start drooling!

Cheers

Alex

Hi Alex, yes it is thee Paul Young, he was on the forum a few weeks back answering questions regarding a poll someone had placed on the forum,as to whether or not he should be presenting more fly fishing programs etc.

Your from london, go into farlows/sportfish of pall mall, ask the questions, you will get the right answers, failing that check out the roxtons fishing web site for info.

In my somewhat limited experience, expect fewer fish at the upper river lodges. However due to the shallower more meandering nature of the river there I found the fishing to be more pleasant with floating lines and small flies working well. The wind is less of a problem due to the hilly surroundings.20lb fish are not uncommon but your chances will be better downstream.
Several 20's were caught on my late week further downstream last year despite less than ideal river conditions. My friend had an early March week and there were four or five caught then as well. Villa Maria has had the best returns for the last few years.
The guides tell me that any week could produce the best fishing and it is impossible to predict much in advance. I met some guys who have fished in Feb at Despedida for over 10 years and they told me that the river is always fishable then. There has been high water recently though.
I think that if you hope for two fish a day it would be realistic.
It is possible to get a deal if you look hard. Don't ignore the Gallegos for a cheaper option, I had a super week there some years ago.
As mentioned in the previous reply, you could try Farlows as I know that Sean Clarke has fished down there a lot.
Hope this has helped.
