Unhappy grxi+ versus wychwood aura

I am purchasing a rod and reel within the next few days and am torn between the grxi+ and the wychwood aura. I have been fishing for years but have gotten a bit more serious in the last year and am looking to upgrade my kit. I fish mainly hebridean hill lochs for wild brown trout. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You're going to have to find somewhere that will allow to try both I reckon, as likely to be a close call and down to personal preference.

Welcome by the way!

I have a GRXi reel and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. For storing a line it does its job but drag etc is terrible.

I have/had a grxi reel and also found the drag to be............. well a drag. Very poor reel in my honest opinion. Cant speak for the wychwood though.

What the reel is like is irelavent to what the rod is like. As splashtest says you,ll need to try them both and see which you prefer. good luck, Alan

Thanks for that, the problem I have is I stay on an island and am mail ordering, I have had a look at both in the shops but it is not the same as trying them out.

for what its worth, i think the wychwood stuff is superior to the greys

that new wychwood sla reel has to be one of the sexiest reels out there for the money

I don't.

This is the problem you have Islay. you'll get loads of different opinions but most will be subjective.

The only real way to compare is to try for yourself.

Also, although I appreciate your post is not about the durability of either outfit, lessen the risk and buy from a dealer like Grommit. At least then you know that he'll sort out any problems.

Hope you get the right gear for you.
Cheers
Don

Hi I have the Greys GRXi rod, GRXi reel, and Wychwood SLA reel. IMO the SLA is head, shoulders, torso, and waist above the GRXi reel, which in my opinion is fine as a budget line holder, but don't expect decent drag, or line placing. The line also slips between the spool and reel housing. The GRXi rod is lovely. it's a very forgiving mid/tip action that'll put out a good line, but is not fast enough for me (i like a very fast action rod). Horses for courses though, if you like quality presentation and mid length casts, try a GRXi.

Cheers
Alex

Like compairing an Astra with a Focus, both will do the job, perfectly functional no nonsense rods.

Reckon looking for the best deal would solve it for me, then spending saved money on the line and leader set up, focussing on the business end, as the rods will do a good job and you'll adapt to your choice.

Without dragging up debates that will make old timers yawn, in my relatively short time on here many discussions conclude that expensive rods are nice to use and have a great feel good factor, something to work up to over time as a good functional rod like the one's you've narrowed down to won't hold you back.
