Default March TF

Ya it's that time of the month again, no not that one the other when TF plops through the door. An improvement on last months. There's a fake letter from 'Peter Griffin', I wonder if he's got a dog called Brian ?, enquiring about the suitability of multi section rods, of course the reply sings the praises of the multi sections. A bit strange I thought, until I turned the page and guess what's reviewed in the tackle section? Yup a 4 piece Hardy Uniqua, and guess what was awarded the prodigious 'Tackle Testers Choice' ? So that's the deal take out a full page advert and get 'Tackle Testers Choice' on any sh@te.
I'll get my swingers out again and predict that 4 sectioned rods will be a disaster for Hardy. Quick we've run out of ideas, I know make it 4 section!

One other point worth a rant, a chappy in the 'advise squad' recommends using 12" droppers and retying after they reach 6". Must have smaller inches down south than us highlanders

I agree completley on all your points. these mags are just a joke. Dont think i have to go into detail coz we all know it. I used to buy mags but you only have to buy so many to see the "advertising" stunts vas mentioned, or the regurgitation of the same information over and over again. Handy for the odd fly pattern but thats about it. A quick 30 second glance in tescos and its read. I find the forum meets my requirements much better.

Why dont some of these magazines go to a fishing venue when they have new tackle to review and let the people who matter, joe public put it through its paces and listen to what they have got to say about it,better still print there results and comments!!!!!

WHY do you people subscribe to these mags?
I may buy 1 every 6/8 months and guess what I'm reading the same rubbish.
Got to confess that I buy more FFFT mags but mainly for the fly patterns.

Whilst in no way wishing to or feeling the need to defend either TF or Hardys, does '4 piece' really count as 'multi-piece' these days?

If someone says multi-piece to me I tend to think of rods like the Orvis Frequent Flyer or the March Brown Series of 6 and 7 pieces.

Why will four section rods be a disaster for Hardy? The Sage rods I own are 4 piece as are some of my Winstons, a couple are 5 piece. No disasters there that I can report. For many, these days, 4 piece is the 'norm' and has been for some considerable time and from a personal perspective I see nothing but benefits from the four piece approach.

With regard to the magazine 'reviews', no advertising revenue ... no magazine. Mind you, with TF and TFF in particular, would that be any great loss?

Whats wrong with 12" droppers??

I'd probably agree with the advice, the longer dropper keeps the fly away from the main leader, aiding presentation, concurrently, if they get too short, IME, I dont feel confident in the presentation and have to re-tie the leader.

Default droppers

it was me that gave the advice on dropper length.....personally i always use 12" droppers when fishing the reservoirs or stillwaters and change leader if and when they get to 6-8".....but i find that i don't change that often....2 or 3 times a day.

I accept that longer droppers are used when fishing traditional wet flies, short lined and dibbled through the top.. as it allows the fly to come the waves better on the lift....but I don't fish that style and the question wasn't aimed at this style.

For example when fishing the bung, droppers are kept short, 10 - 12" (in my case) and when fishing the washing line again i keep them reasonably short....

Long droppers 12"- 18" tend to tangle more if you try and get distance, or are casting into a stiff wind....

Still each to their own.....i'll stick to the way i fish and droppers of - 8- 12"...it's never hindered me....

cheers rob

Oh my god. I have just bought three fly lines on the strength of a review in Tand S. Two double taper floating lines and a forward taper?? Grey's platinum heron colour and a forward taper. Have I been sold a load of rubbish ????
