Using a floating line with a booby on the point to keep the line up and then a couple of buzzers on droppers so it all looks like a washing line hope this helps and welcome to the forum.

and it doesn't have to be a floating line. Very effective on slow inter to Di7 as well.

should have added you could use an intermediate line and slow retrieve.

I think you need a bit more in depth explanation here,
The set up given is correct, how you fish it is important.
I usually fish the set up above on a floater or intermediate and occasionally on a DI3. It is rare that I use buzzers with boobies on anything deeper, other flies work better for me at depth.
The way I have most success is to cast a long line, give two or three good hard pulls to straigten the leader and level the buzzers with the booby and then fish it back as slowly as possible. Often the takes come with seconds of the last pull as the buzzers start to sink.
Another good variation is Booby on top and bottom and skinny cormorant(s) on the dropper(s). I won a match at Bewl fishing this method with two blob boobies and two size 14 cormorants with only 5 or 6 strands of marabou in the wing. Most of the fish came to the cormorants. The two boobies enable you to fish the flies almost static in calm weather from a boat.

If you fish this set up quickly you loose the hanging sinking fly effect although it will still catch fish.

Cheers

While i agree with most of the above, but not everything....

First the washing line method is a way of presenting 3 or 4 flies at the same level (more or less as the leader and flies will cause a bow in the line), and as has been pointed out it's usually with a booby on the point and on a line from a floater to a DI-3.

However the method does work on faster sinking lines....Di-5 and Di-7.....even a DI-8 on occasions....but it's not that common and i agree other methods are usually more effective.

Personally I'd use any flies with this method (blobs, Mckay, damsels and not just buzzers and crunchers)....but for me the most important factor in the whole set up is:-

The size of the eyes on the booby and the size/gauge of hooks used the leader length and type (fluro or co-polymer)....it's critical in my opinion ! !

Simply because it will determine the angle and how quickly the set up sinks....

You really need the same boobies with a variety of eye sizes....from say 3mm - 6mm..

With the best boobies being Sparkler, Cats Whisker, Damsel, Black, Tequila..

When you pull the boobies the disturbance to the water (the pop) can be felt, seen and heard by the fish...it attracts them to your cast and flies...

For this reason i find that rather than to pull sharply once at the start of the retrieve it's much more effective to do it 2 or 3 time during the length of the cast....it basically induces the take (as does the change of speed of retrieve)

The booby is the most versitile fly in your box....it works on every line and will produce fish (if used on the right line)everyday of the season.......

In my experience it will account for 30% or more of all fish caught when fishing this method.....

Yeah nice Jim...but it's also worth mentioning that people shouldn't get confused with the "Airflo Washing Line" which is an actual fly line designed for this method of fishing in the surface layers

In my opinion it's a pile of poo ! ! and just a gimmick, with the same effect being achieved on a midge tip line or mini tip etc....it's a completely pointless product.
