Default Edinburgh Stillwaters

I spend a couple of days a week in Edinburgh. Reckon I can get some evening fishing in on occasion, particularly as we approach summer. Grommit has armed me with a 9' 6" X-flite so I'm thinking about some stillwater fishing in the first instance, though my preference is river fishing.

Any recommendations/avoids? I've found Rosslynlee and Allendale, so will probably start with those two. Took a drive out to Allendale yesterday and it was frozen over. (Had a bit of trouble finding it. If you're ever looking for it btw, follow the sign for the five sisters zoo from West Calder, and it's next door to that!).

Anyway, any thoughts and/or comments appreciated.
Cheers
Stuart

You,ll find far better than alandale nearer edinburgh if you can get a map of the pentlands you,ll see there,s aprox 15 resiviors in there most of them good to fish if you take the currie balerno road out of edinburgh you,ll pass harlaw, thriepmuir, harperrig, crosswood then cobinshaw which i,m unsure about being open to the public ? but the others mentioned are. crosswood i can recomend there,s fish there from 3 to 12 lb rainbow, tiger and brownies £12.00 for 4 hours. out the other side of edinburgh there,s also a lot of resivoirs loganlea, badensgill, and a whole load more that i can,t remember the names of. Good luck Alan

Hi,

My Girlfriend lives in Edinburgh so I spend a fair amount of time around there. Only just recently thought to take my fishing stuff with me to pass the time when she wants to do shopping etc (why I didn't htink of this earlier I'll never know!). I went to Markle on Monday.

4 hr catch and release ticket was £9.50-good value. I managed 4, mostly to buzzers on a floater. good fun and good to get out fishing again. Its near east Linton off the A1.

Cheers,
TS

Thanks for the replies.

Scooby I shall go and do a google search for Harlaw, Thriepmuir, Harperrig and Crosswood and add them to my list.

TS, I took a look at the website for Markle and it looks good too. Shame it's the 'wrong' side of Edinburgh for me, but I'm sure it will be worth the trip.

Thanks again.

Cheers
Stuart

Hi mate,Bangour is also in that area.I`m not too sure when it opens,as i`m sure it`s closed for the winter. No doubt somebody can post with a date. Rosslynlee is a great wee venue,as is Crosswood and Loganlea if you are after something a bit bigger.Wee Joey

Cheers Wee Joey, just had a look at the Bangour website and it looks good. Also is about the same distance away as Allandale for me (based near the airport), so that's also really good.
This is shaping up nicely!
Cheers

Morton's not far from you either.
Haven't fished it for years but it was pretty good last time I was there.
Beecraigs is also good although not that easy to get a booking as it's pretty popular and boat only.

The River Almond runs past the airport.

Cramond Angling Club

If you can source a copy of Angling in the Lothians a booklet by Graham Priestley it is a guide to over 35 different waters in the area. The one I have is the fourth edition dated 1991 so it is a bit out of date regarding permits but the rest is still relevant.

Fishtales is correct, get yourself down the Almond or the Water of Leith both rivers have a good head of wild trout. The WoL gets a stocking of browns (which spoils it a bit for me) but it also has grayling. The WoL is permitted but free fishing (season runs from 1st April to end of September). The Almond is effectively free above Newbridge (but there are moves a foot to change this) and permitted by Cramond Angling club below there (see the link in Fishtales post) Season open on the 15th and ends on the 6th Oct.

If your prefer rivers that's where to head. No point in messing around with the stillwaters.

Default Fisheries

If you fancy a small trip across the bridge to fife then Easter Balado is always open regardless of the temprature. Its just next to Kinross, just turn left at the roundabout and after 1/2 mile turn left at the sign Easter balado follow the signs from there. Great wee fishery, cristal clear and free rising fish even at this time of year.

Graeme.
