Default Utterly brilliant book

I didn’t buy Bob Wyatt’s ‘Trout Hunting’ when it first came out in 2004. I had devoured and enjoyed his articles in Fly Fishing & Fly Tying, and reckoned that they would largely be duplicated in the book, so why would I want the stuff twice over? Anyhow, with the passage of sufficient time, I recently borrowed the book from a mate and have been dipping in all over the place for the last couple of days, and can only praise it to the stars. The guy simply ‘gets it’. This isn’t really for those who fish small stocked stillwaters for rainbows, it’s more for the hunter of wild fish (grown on’s count, IMO). You will seldom read more ‘truth’ in a UK fishing book. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

It is a great book but with the risk of igniting the 'purist' thread again, he is one.

He has some views which would rile many. His view on small put and takes is pretty ............ blunt.

......and pretty much spot on. An excellent book - one of the best I've read. Which reminds me: when do I get my copy back Rob??

Does Wyatt somehow suggest that small wild fish are more "worthy" than bigger stocked fish from small stillwaters?
If so...
I've caught both & I don't see how anyone with a brain can say that a 7oz wild river fish which has probably never seen a fly before is more difficult to catch than a 15lb'er from Avington which gets cast at repeatedly by everyone from the instant it is stocked. It simply defies logic.
Still, I'm sure it's a great book.

If the Barmcakes got it, you can kiss it goodbye Matt.
Tell him to bring it on the 18th, and then I'll nick it off you for a while, sounds a good read, and it's obviously helped you.

Yes Steven, the inter-bred has it......and a few other titles as well

I don't remember there being any advice in Wyatt's book as to what to do when you are getting spanked by the opposition pair during a sweepstake on a dour big fish water, so I don't know what use he'll be getting from it.

I'm on page two.... no rush is there? Don't know where Wyatt get this idea from though, that a wild, free, free-thinking, fee-spirited, spontaneous, opportunistic, wonder of natural selection and evolution is more 'worthy' than a freaky fat pellet pig Anyway, I'm off to order my Pennine season ticket, so I can get lots of masculine bends in my rod. That reminds me... must tie some of those clever, pretty 'Stalking' bugs'.
