Default Grayling flies etc on ebay

Long awaited trip to river Dee coming up.

I have limited experience and my mate has next to none so were not expecting to catch much (other than a cold I suspect). I'm looking for 30-50 flies/nyphs etc. to put on my rod for grayling and probably cheap from ebay as most will end up on the bushes.

If anyone did have the time and the inclination I just wondered what they would get and how they would fish them? Opinions gratefully received.

They shouldn't end up in trees if just roll casting or short lining.

Better to get 20 to 25 quality flees rather than 40 to 50 poor ones on poor hooks.

Excellent person to deal with, and will ensure you have the right flies and plenty of info.
Highly recommended.

Don't forget small dry-flies. A #18 Red Tag can be deadly on a crisp winter's day on the middle & upper Dee.

What Association water or beats do you intend fishing?

Just looked at the LotS link. I appreciate your advice that a few good ones are better than a host of poor. I may call the site for advice on a selection for that area.

Not sure of the association yet but was aiming for Llangollen or Bala as they are not too far from where I will be staying.

I really like the idea of surface fishing as for a beginner I can see whats going on. I didnt think anything came to the surface in the cold I was always under the impression that everything stayed down. I'm definately up for some red tags. Anything else that floats?

Hi Simon.
You could try the 'Klink & Dink' style, Tie on a dry Klinkhammer, then tie on, New Zealand style, beyond the dry fly, a small Mary, or similar tiny gold bead hairs ear nymphy thing, I like a bit of pink wool near the head for Grayling. Cast upstream and watch the dry Klinkhammer, if it moves or dips, lift immediately, Grayling can take off the top or underneath, this covers both options. Just get the depth right for the nymph.
I used to fish the Dee near Bala through a farmers field when I was 14 (40 years ago!, I know, old git) there were some clonking fish about then. In those far off days, I used red tags fished in a team of 3, down & across..ah the memories.
