Default Melvin Info

Well looks my eldest kids have booked a house facing Lough Melvin for a weeks family break...im wondering why there

Any how as its the second week in July its booked and i might be tempted to bring my rod....would anyone know which fleas would be best round this time as it will be my first visit and i would like to tie some flies for the trip.

All info appreciated.

Hi Geordie, there happens to be an article in the new (March) FF&FT on Melvin where George Barron suggests a few flies and a few drifts. Never fished it (yet), but I know from others that the usual lough suspects will worry a few fish.... Bumbles, Dabblers, Palmers, Trads etc. I believe Claret does well on its day... where doesn't it?

Hi Gtrout,

You are hitting that area just about right!!!
At that time of the year you probably be getting mostly sedges, a few mayflies and a good lot of terrestrial black house flies.
Generally a claret dabbler on top, golden olive dabbler next, a green peter next and something black on the point, like a connemara black.
If you pm me with the details where you are staying I should be able to sort you out with the best drifts etc.One thing though, you'll need a boat!! But be sure to have a life vest, no joking, this place can blow and blow big very quickly.I would even think about a ghillee!!
If it's bank fishing you are after then there is Lough kenaghan just out side belleek. It's a ministry water with a 3 day permit around £5.This permit will also let you fish mill lough and the navar forest Park loughs which have rainbows and browns. If you fancy Salmon you can also fish the drowse, it should be getting the grilse run in just about then.
There is also great saltwater fly fishing in ballyshannon estuary, where you can get good seatrout and slob trout fishing.
Starting to sound like the pheckin tourist Board Now!!!

Best Regards,
Sam

Yes m8 had a couple of scary ones on Lough Carromore i know all about the wind on the west coast, nothing like a look of fear on your ghillies face and bailing out water to soil the under garments.

Its well worth it g, just heed Sams words.

As for rocks, there are not too many and July you would be over the deeps anyway. But Lough Carromore won't put a patch on this lake when it comes to swell and waves.

Hire a guide, there are a couple around the shores. Jim Hoy and Sean Maguire about the 2 most popular I hear people talking about but I am sure there are more.

If nothing else they will know how to handle the boat and keep you right on flies.
