Default Improvement to Lamington Angling Improvement Association

I hear, following their AGM, that the Association as from the end of the coming season will close the river for all fishing from the end of January till 15th March.

Great news, now all that is needed is for them to do the same for the month of October.

The Clyde used to close for February.
Not sure how much it helps the river.

It gives the Brownies a chance to recover after their winter dancing, I like the idea come the 15th March they are not all line shy.

You would know better than most Buzz you fish it enough.
Even with the hard winter, i think the upper Clyde has been fish pretty hard this season.
What happened on the UCAPA water regarding closing for feb?
Why did they do it and why did they scrap it?

Mark, what became of the Quarry threat ? is it now settled, or still ongoing.
To be honest, they would probably be better closing the river to fishing from march 15th to September 31st.
That way the trout would get a rest from the Buzz bashing you give them.

I must point out that we have made a change to our rules..... river is fly fishing only on the main stretch of the water, no spinning, baiting or minnow fishing allowed, but spinning is allowed still at Barrie's quarry, Langholm Farm. In addition, we have instigated a close season on the river from 01FEB2011 until the start of the trout season, March 2011 to give the trout a bit of a rest. We hear regularly from grayling anglers that they are catching trout - bet they wish they could catch them during the trout season! - so we thought this would be a good idea. It's common practice on many rivers.

Look forward to hearing from you,

regards,

Maggie

It is indeed above is e-mail i received from Maggie . Sensible idea .

The Lamington stretch IMHO has in recent years been more forward thinking than UCAPA who seem to have one eye (their good one) on the Salmon fishing.

I'm talking about banning spinning and using minnows, trying to address cormorant predation, caring for the environment, regular checks of permits while giving out good advice, and having a no stocking policy.

Now I’m not referring to anyone on this forum (cause I don't know you) but what sticks in my craw is when folk pack up on the last day of the trout season and then appear at the same pool next day with the same set up casting to the same rises. Except we are now fishing for grayling...right ?

Same applies to those that are on the water one week or one day before the trout season starts, yup we are after grayling but inadvertently hook a few trout while we are at it.

Now this may not bother some people cause a fish is a fish to them, but it does me. Give the trout a break, those in the know can catch (and distress) a pair of good trout one after another at the start of the current "grayling season"

Eh? what the f uck do you think the fish are up to ?

Same applies to the grayling, give them a break as well. The river was becoming a hammered all year round fishery with no clear seasons. Sure, have an odd trip in the dead of winter if you feel the need but otherwise live with the fact the season is over, tie a few flies, go to a dub pond or do what I do.... drink more.

PPS I agree with all you say.
I have fished the Clyde since the start of last season till now.
This years season will soon be here and the river hasnt had a break.
Its nice to catch grayling but how many trout do you catch for every
grayling?
My best trout for last year came after the season ended.
Infact I havn't caught a grayling-all small trout.
Last year was my first full season fly fishing.
I will go fishing when ever I can.
But the Clyde should have a break and so should I. Peter
