Hi Bobcat. I fish Avon Springs regularly. My last trip was on Saturday 30 January. I had 4 very nice rainbows, best a shade over 8lb. "Find the actual springs themselves and you will find the fish" is the way in this cold weather. There are springs in both lakes.

As to tactics, a floating line and maybe a slow glass intermediate or similar will be more than adequate. Damsel nymphs, Cove PTNs, Superglue buzzers, Woolly b*gg*rs and Dawsons Olives are all good patterns. Nice slow figure of 8 retrieve, having let the flies sink to midwater or thereabouts. Boobies are not allowed, and anyway would be of dubious value due to the weed that's present all year and the fish tending to hold a little way off the lake bed.

Currently £45 a day, Bobcat.

The fish now coming out are of good size, in addition to the 8lb fish I had two 7 pounders and a 5 in the bag last week.

As regards the springs - there are some in the top third (towards the far end) of the first lake from the house, in the middle of the lake, and on the far side of the second of the 2 islands in the second lake. Also, there is a deeper hole at the house end of the first lake that could be worth some attention.

The Avon Springs lakes are rather bigger than those at Rockbourne and have different characteristics to one another, fishing the water is the way to go on the first lake but some stalking is possible on the second.

Not having tried Manningford, I can't offer any comparison.

I have bought a book of 10 tickets each year at Avon Springs for the last few seasons...despite what some folks would have you believe, you need to get to know a small stillwater in the same way as you do a river or reservoir. Obviously the sheer volume you have to learn is less for a 5 acre small water than a 200 acre reservoir !

The Avon Springs river beat is enjoyable fishing for both trout and grayling, by the way.
